A Study of Matthew 23:2-3 And More

This is Part 2 of Part 6 of our study on A Study of Matthew 23:2-3 And More. If you missed Part 1, click HERE.

Nehemia Gordon who is a Karaite Jew lives in Jerusalem. He wrote a book titled The Hebrew Yeshua vs. The Greek Jesus—New Light On The Seat Of Moses From Shem-Tov’s Hebrew Matthew.” I recently re-read his book and I had forgotten the significance of Matthew 23:2-3.

You may be asking yourself “What is a Karaite Jew?” Karaite Jew’s are different than the main line Orthodox Jews we are all familiar with these days. A Karaite Jew is one who uses the Tanakh (Old Testament) only. They do not use nor believe in the “Oral Torah” that the Orthodox Jews believe in. Nor do the Karaite’s use the Talmud, Mishna or Gemara or any other Jewish writings outside the Tanakh. Karaite means “Scripturalist.” They do not believe that the Messiah has come at this point. They, like the Orthodox Jews, are looking for the return of the Messiah.

I personally had a chance to meet Nehemia Gordon several years ago when he came to the Dallas area with Michael Rood. I found Nehemia quite different from some of the Jews I have met and heard about. Some Jews have the attitude that they are better than everyone else and if you are not a Jew, you are a second class citizen. I still love them right where they are even though we have our differences.

After re-reading Nehemia’s book, I wanted to pass on to everyone what he wrote in his book. For some of you, you already know this information, but for others this will be new information. Quite interesting and revealing. I encourage everyone who has not purchased Nehemia’s book to do so. You may purchase his book or DVD at www.hilkiahpress.com.

The story all started out by a “Torah Keeping Christian” who had some issues with Matthew 23:2-3 and he was given information that he needed to contact Nehemia Gordon on this. So, he contacted Nehemia and after a meeting or two Nehemia agreed to look at the text to see what he could find.

As Nehemia compared the Greek translation of Matthew’s Gospel to the ancient Hebrew text, he was astonished at the clarity of Yeshua’s words in the original Hebrew language. The Greek text contained common ‘Hebrew to Greek’ translation errors that have caused the words of Yeshua to become critically distorted from what was accurately recorded in Hebrew. Yeshua’s brutally honest and precisely chosen words in the Hebrew version of Matthew are nothing less than revolutionary.

WHATSOEVER THEY BID YOU OBSERVE

I personally checked seventeen different translations I have including Jay P. Green, Sr.’s edition of The Interlinear Bible Greek/English translation and all but one of the translations I have on hand translate these verses the same. Let’s take a look at the King James Version of Matthew 23:2-3—

2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.” (KJV)

If we take the time to look closely at this text and keep it in context, we will see that we as believers in Messiah Yeshua/Jesus, we are to obey what the scribes and Pharisees tell us to do. Did you catch that? Read it again. Specifically verse 3 “All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe…” Amazing!!!

The Torah Keeping Christian explained to Nehemia that it appears to him that Yeshua seems to be saying that the Pharisees teach with authority because they sit in “Moses’ Seat” as it is written in verse 2. Nehemia stated he was not familiar with this concept of “Moses’ Seat” and asked what it meant.

The Torah Keeping Christian explained to Nehemia that there are two main opinions on the meaning of the phrase “Moses’ Seat.” Some said that in every synagogue there was an actual chair called a “Moses’ Seat” in which the leaders of that congregation would sit and teach with authority. The other opinion was that “Moses’ Seat” was a figure of speech indicating someone who teaches with the authority of Moses. Either way, the statement that the Pharisees sit in “Moses’ Seat” meant that they have some kind of Mosaic authority. The way the text of the Greek version of Matthew is written seems to be saying that the words of the Pharisees should be followed but because of the hypocrisies of the Pharisees, we should not be doing what they do. This makes no sense to me when I read it. Why would I listen to a Pharisee and do as he instructs me and yet not do as he does? I just did not understand why Matthew was telling us this. It looked to me like this may be one of those two faced text that says one thing on one side and another thing on the other side.

I begin to understand a little better when I reflected back upon some of Yeshua’s confrontations with the Pharisees in the four Gospels. He came down on them all for obeying their own man-made laws and not being obedient to the Written Torah/Law.

Going back to the Greek Matthew, it is implying that a true believer in Messiah Yeshua/Jesus would need to do whatever the Pharisees taught in order to faithfully obey Yeshua’s instructions. If we stop here and think about this, this would imply that we as true believers in Messiah Yeshua would need to follow all the rules and regulations which the Pharisees invented without any Scriptural backing what so ever. There are many man-made Rabbinic laws that are NOT backed up by Scriptures. These man-made laws are not to be confused with nor do they have anything to do with Yahweh’s Written Word, the Torah/Law. We are talking apples and oranges here. Night and day.

Let’s take a look at one of these man-made laws the Rabbi’s have made up. This will help you understand what I am talking about here.

This Rabbinic instruction that we will first look at is on “how to tie your shoes.”

A person must first put on their right shoe, but not tie it. Then they must put on the left shoe and tie it and then go back and tie the right shoe. (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chayim 2:4)

Rabbi Moshe Isserles who is an Ashkenazie Rabbi added an additional note to the above reference for those who do not wear lace up shoes. He added that the sequence of putting on their shoe is still the same even though there are no laces. The person still must put on the right shoe first and then the left shoe.

I also learned several years ago that all these “added” man-made laws act like a “fence” around the Torah so no one can break the Torah. When I read this, it immediately reminded me of how I have seen and heard others give testimony of this very same thing happening in different Christian Churches. They have made up their own rules and regulations on what can and cannot be done in their churches. How sad! This is the “very” thing Messiah Yeshua spoke against in the Gospels and yet our Christian Churches have not made the connection. I can guarantee you that if Yeshua were here today, He would rebuke the Christian Churches like He did the Pharisees because they put more emphasis on their “traditions” than they did and still do in obeying His Absolute Written Word.

Nehemia shared with the Torah Keeping Christian that he understood his dilemma but if this is what Yeshua taught then perhaps he ought to obey the Pharisees. Nehemia stated he did not see what the problem was. Then the Torah Keeping Christian said that when we continue to read the rest of Matthew Chapter 23, Yeshua is warning his disciples not to follow the errors of the Pharisees. For example:

Matthew 23:13 “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.” (KJV)

We have to ask ourselves here “Could Messiah Yeshua be instructing us to obey these Pharisees who are clearly shutting up the Kingdom of Heaven against all men?”

The Torah Keeping Christian said, we need to look at Matthew 23:27 where it is written:

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.” (KJV)

In this Scripture, we see where Yeshua is describing the Pharisees as “whited sepulchers (tombs)” which contain every type of unclean thing in them. Could Yeshua really be telling His followers to obey the instructions of those He was calling hypocrites and “whited sepulchers (tombs)?”

Nehemia stated here that perhaps Yeshua recognized the Rabbinical prerogative to invent new laws, but on the other hand He was accusing them of not following their own man-made rules. To Nehemia this seemed to be the meaning of the passage in English. The Torah Keeping Christian said there is another reason he had a hard time accepting that Yeshua would instruct his disciples to obey the Pharisees. He pointed Nehemia to Matthew Chapter 15 which is the story about the disciples sitting down to eat bread and not washing their hands. The Pharisees explained to Yeshua that His disciples were violating the traditions of the elders and Yeshua responded that it was the Pharisees who were violating the Torah by imposing these man-made traditions.

A CONTRADICTION IN THE GREEK MATTHEW?

Nehemia shared with his Torah Keeping Christian that the textural problem was quite clear. In Matthew Chapter 15 Yeshua seems to be telling His disciples to stay away from the man-made commandments of the Pharisees while in Matthew 23:1-3, He was telling they to obey whatever the Pharisees teach because they sit in the Seat of Moses and they have his authority.

Nehemia stated that the first “solution” he came across was from a so-called Bible Critic. The Bible Critic said that Matthew Chapter 15 was written by an anti-Pharisee disciple of Yeshua while Matthew Chapter 23 was written by a pro-Pharisee disciple. Each of these disciples simply heard in Yeshua’s words what he wanted to hear based on his own preconceived notions. Nehemia stated he did not rule this out but he was not impressed by it either. Nehemia said this appeared to be more speculation to him than anything else. Nehemia asked himself “Were there really pro-Pharisaic and anti-Pharisaic factions in the early Church?” He said that he has yet to come across any historical documentation to prove that there is any such thing.

Most Christian scholars simply admit that Yeshua could not have meant for His disciples to obey the Pharisees but were unable to offer any plausible explanation of the fact that the book of Matthew attributes these words to Him. Nehemia said he checked the original Greek text for Matthew 23:2-3 and he found that the standard English translation had faithfully represented what was written in the Greek.

GREEK OR HEBREW?

Nehemia consulted with some of his colleagues and they told him that some scholars were of the opinion that parts of the first three Gospels of the New Testament were originally written in Hebrew. He asked them why they thought this and he was told “Because they are full of Hebraisms.” Nehemia explained once he heard this about the Hebraisms that the Septuagint was translated by very bad translators. Rather than translate the Tanach (Old Covenant/Testament) into proper Greek, they mechanically translated the words leaving behind numerous Hebrew thought patterns. To someone who is familiar with the Tanach in Hebrew this Greek is relatively easy to read. However, to a Classical Greek specialist who expects to find elegant Greek syntax it sounds like gibberish. He also went on to state that in ancient times it was no better.

Very often the translators did not even know what they were reading and created nonsensical sentences by translating word for word. There are two types of translations that I am aware of. One is called “translation” and the other is called “transliteration.” The breakdown on these two is as follows:

What does “transliterate” mean?

“Transliterate” is when you take a word from one language to another which involves “trans-lettering.” This is taking each corresponding letter from the original language and using the closest sounding letters in the target alphabet to duplicate the exact sound of the word. The meaning of the word is not involved in this transliteration process.

What does “translate” mean?

To “translate” is to carry over the meaning or interpretation of any word or phrase from one language to another. Not sounds but thoughts and ideas are transferred. What we might call gibberish or confusion is explained and rendered understandable when the sound from one language is equated with a similar idea or concept in another. It does not matter if the sound is written or spoken; the objective of translating a word is to convey or transfer the meaning of the word or concept, not the sound of it.

Nehemia found that numerous Greek copyists who did not know any Hebrew tried to “improve” what was clearly poor Greek. The result was a translation which at times mimics the Hebrew word for word and at other times wildly differs from it.

Nehemia said after a quick perusal of the first three Gospels in Greek he could see they contained some Hebraisms. Certainly not to the same extent as the Septuagint, but they were there. He stated that Blass and Debrunner, the standard grammar of New Testament Greek, explains the situation:

Many expressions which a Greek would not have used were bound to creep into a faithful translation of a Semitic original.

Blass and Debrunner go on to say that these Semitic expressions are “Aramaisms.” Nehemia researched this and discovered there was a long-standing debate among New Testament scholars about whether certain parts of the New Testament (especially Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts and Revelation) were originally written in Aramaic or Hebrew. Those in favor of an Aramaic original were by far the majority but as Nehemia gradually worked, his was through the Greek of the first three Gospels he kept running into things like “and it was” which could only be Hebraisms and not Aramaisms. Nehemia noted that in Aramaic this phrase “and it was” is just as much gibberish as it is in Greek.

After several weeks of grueling research, Nehemia was no closer than when he started this project to finding the truth.

Before we move on, I thought you may be interested in knowing what a “Hebraism” is. According to the Mirriam-Webster Online Dictionary (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hebraism), a “Hebraism” is “a characteristic feature of Hebrew occurring in another language. The thought, spirit, or practice of the Hebrews. A moral theory or emphasis attributed to the Hebrews.”

This concludes our study of Part 2 of Part 6 on A Study of Matthew 23:2-3 And More. Stay tuned for Part 3.

MIXT MULTITUDE

HONEY Fried Pancakes

August 14, 2021

Numbers 11 Acts 23

Numbers 11:4 And the mixt multitude that was among them

[non-Israelis (as myself) mixed in among the Israelis (see Romans 11:17)]

fell a lusting:

and the children of Israel also wept again,

and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?

Some religions, today, are vegan (and this passage of Scripture may be one of the reasons why) even though we are told that this “mixt multitudehad livestock, in:

Numbers 11:22 Shall the flocks and the herds be slain for them,

to suffice them? or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to suffice them? [there is over one MILLION people to feed, here!]

This “mixt multitude” was sick-and-tired of MANNA, Honey-Fried-Pancakes:

Numbers 11:6 But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.

MANNA” is The BREAD from Heaven that ALL the people were rejecting! see:

John 6:35 And Yeshua Jesus said unto them, I am The BREAD of LIFE: he that cometh to ME shall never hunger; and he that believeth on ME shall never thirst.

and:

John 6:48 I am that BREAD of LIFE. [recorded for us in Numbers 11 !!]

What else does our entire Holy Bible tell us? lOOkie:

Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be;

and that which is done is that which shall be done:

and there is no new thing under the sun.

If, for a moment, we could hold our New Testament “horses” and focus on the number (as the name of the book we are reading :o)))

Numbers 11:23 And the LORD said unto Moses, Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? thou shalt see now whether MY WORD shall come to pass unto thee or not.

Numbers 11:24 And Moses went out, and told the people The WORDs of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

Is 70 a significant number? How many “horsemen” were sent to deliver our Apostle Paul safely? Is this mere coincidence:

Acts 23:23 And he [the chief captain of the Roman forces] called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten [70 !], and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

What’s all the hubbub??? Answer: CONSPIRACY and REVOLT in the CAMP!

Acts 23:12 And when it was day, certain [not all, but of the “baser sort” (see Acts 17:5)] of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

Acts 23:13 And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

Acts 23:14 And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

Acts 23:15 Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him [Paul] down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

Acts 23:16 And when Paul's sister's son [Paul’s nephew] heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

Paul’s New Testament nephew is in TOTAL COMPLIANCE with:

Leviticus 5:1 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity [see Luke 13:27 But HE Yeshua shall say, I tell you, I know you not whence ye are; depart from ME, all ye workers of iniquity.].

Paul’s nephew did the right thing, right? Yes, indeed. ABBA’s Instructions for The WAY to live LIFE are written in HIS TRUTH = TORAH (per Psalm 119;142 & John 14:6).

How many “elders” did Moses gather?

Numbers 11:24 And Moses went out, and told the people The WORDs of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

Numbers 11:25 And the LORD came down in a cloud, and spake unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him [Moses], and gave it unto the seventy elders: and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease. [see 2 Kings 2:9 re: Elijah & Elisha !!]

Again, we have DIVISION – amputation within the BODY! Two men remained in the camp and did NOT go out with Moses and the 70 elders (Numbers 11:26 – 29) and then we have an instant replay:

Mark 9:38 And John answered HIM, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in THY name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

Mark 9:39 But Yeshua Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in MY name, that can lightly speak evil of ME.

Mark 9:40 For he that is not against us is on our part. [the echo of Numbers 11:26 – 29 !]

As the sun sets, this evening, SHAVUA TOV (hava good week) and may our allegiance to the ONE and ONLY TRUE GOD unite us, as we are sprinting to the finish; and, may the BREAD of LIFE from Heaven descend upon you and fill you to overflowing. Shalom aleichem. (Peace be upon you.)

THE PASSION

September 10, 2021

Deuteronomy 9 & 10 First Corinthians 16

Who is in charge? Who is The GREATEST? Cassius Clay, Muhammad Ali, claimed that he was, as he would “Float like a butterfly and STING like a BEE.” The world is FULL of the BIGGEST-MAN-ON-CAMPUS with total arrogance in each individual with no humility! IF The one and only ALMIGHTY GOD offered you THE throne of this EARTH — how would you respond? Would we finally have Capital Hill back? OR ….

YHVH offered Moses The THRONE of this EARTH by saying:

Deuteronomy 9:13 Furthermore YHVH spake unto me [Moses], saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

Deuteronomy 9:14 Let ME alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee [Moses] a nation mightier and greater than they.

Moses could have been PUMPED! The BIGGEST man to ever walk the campus of this Earth: BUT, Moses showed us humility extraordinaire by replying to The ALMIGHTY:

Deuteronomy 9:25-29 Thus I fell down before YHVH forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because YHVH had said HE would destroy you. I prayed therefore unto YHVH, and said, O Adonoy YeHoVee, destroy not THY people and THINE inheritance, which THOU hast redeemed through THY greatness, which THOU hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember THY servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin: Lest the land whence THOU broughtest us out [Egypt] say, Because YHVH was not able to bring them into the land which HE promised them, and because HE hated them, HE hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. Yet they are THY people and THINE inheritance, which THOU broughtest out by THY mighty power and by THY stretched out arm.

THAT, dearly Beloved, is PASSION! To recognize and honor the ALMIGHTY with no desire to usurp HIS position, nor the position of HIS Wife!! With very smooth shifting of synchronized gears, “The genuine PASSION of CHRIST” is in this very same ballpark. That movie takes our attention TOTALLY AWAY from who and what WE are! That movie turns Isaiah 52:14 inside out and backwards!! Lets review:

Isaiah 52:14 As many were astonied at THEE; HIS visage was so marred more than any man, and HIS form more than the sons of men:

Is your focus now on the bloody mangled mass of Christ’s flesh in a crown of thorns? As I told a dedicated follower of Mel Gibson’s passion, “Our MESSIAH was our Passover LAMB, not chop suey.”

Has Roman Catholicism and Hollywood NAILED our attention to “the cross? Have we forgotten John 3:9, 10 and the ESSENCE of SPIRIT juxtaposed with flesh

John 3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto HIM, How can these things be?

John 3:10 YESHUA answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?

WHAT things? Here’s a clue:

1 Corinthians 10:17 For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread [this is the SPIRITUAL BODY of our MESSIAH, juxtaposed with:].

1 Corinthians 10:18 Behold Israel after the flesh:

What hurts more, hitting your thumb with a hammer OR the laughter of those who mock you during the pain?? During the 2,000 years since the Ministry of our MESSIAH, HIS BODY has become so MARRED that WE are beyond recognition!

GETTA GRIP!

So called SUNday church, today, has absolutely NO IMAGE of our JEWISH KING! HIS BODY is so marred today that it is totally NON-recognizable! Few have repented and returned to WHO and WHAT our MESSIAH really IS! This IS precisely what Isaiah 52:14 is talking about! YOU and me!! Does our form have any resemblance of HIM in any WAY???!!!

Why did our Apostle Paul say:

1 Corinthians 16:2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.

???

Wolves in sheep’s clothing” use this passage for BIGGER offering plate gathering on SUNday, “the first day of the week;” when in reality, “the first day of the week” is a WORK day for harvesting crops — so that when Paul is with them on The LORD’s SABBATH (the 7th day!) there is no WORK! Again, the BODY is so MARRED that when our SAVIOR returns, HE will say:

Matthew 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from ME, ye that work iniquity [iniquity is LawLESSness = without TORAH!].

With all that blood & guts passion of Mel Gibson’s movie, the marred body of “Christ” has also nailed our FATHER’s INSTRUCTIONS for LIFE to the cross as the “body” has become WORKERS of INIQUITY!!

Moses is our EXAMPLE, per First Corinthians 10:1-4, not to mention Matthew 8:4, 17:3, Mark 1:14, 7:10, 10:3What did Moses command you?” and the list goes on.

Are WE HIS BODY or not? Herein should be our PASSION!

FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST

Deuteronomy 15 First Corinthians 12-13

1 Corinthians 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly;

but then face to face:

now I know in part;

but then shall I know even as also I am known.

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abideth faith,

hope,

charity,

these three;

but the greatest of these is charity.

CHARITY

G26

ἀγάπη

agapē

ag-ah'-pay

From G25; love, that is, affection or benevolence;

specifically (plural) a love feast: - (feast of) charity ([-ably]), dear, love.

As The LORD’s Feast of SUKKOT draweth nigh, I have fond memories of SUKKOTs gone by and my FONDEST MEMORIES are of our group reading of the book of DEUTERONOMY. This book is our Beloved BROTHER Moses giving his complimentary close. DEU is our DOUBLE-TAKE. It is our REVIEW of GOD’s INSTRUCTIONS for LIFE in TRUTH and the WAY to live it, as Yeshua said of HIMself in John 14:6! Moses wrote what The LORD said of our coming MESSIAH:

Deuteronomy 18:17 And The LORD said unto me [Moses], They have well spoken that which they have spoken.

Deuteronomy 18:18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren [YESHUA = SALVATION H3444], like unto thee [Moses], and will put MY WORDs in HIS mouth; and HE [YESHUA] shall speak unto them [even to you & me] ALL that I shall command HIM.

Of late, a very dear man has become very near to my heart. It seems impossible for him to grasp the TRUTH because of his dedication to his man-made religion. His very first and most emphatic declaration of his belief system is that he does NOT use any musical instruments in worship because he follows “CHRISTnot David. I tried to conceal how stunned I was; because, David is a man after GOD’s OWN HEART according to:

1 Samuel 13:14 But now thy [King Saul, son of Kish — Saul’s] kingdom shall not continue: The LORD hath sought HIM a man after HIS own heart, and The LORD hath commanded him [David] to be captain over HIS people, because thou [Saul] hast not kept that which The LORD commanded thee. …

1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him [David] in the midst of his brethren: and The SPIRIT of The LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Has this been changed in the “NEW” Testament? I think not:

Acts 13:22 And when HE The LORD had removed him Saul, HE the LORD raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also HE gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after MINE own heart, which shall fulfil all MY will.

TOTALLY rejected by a religion, which refuses to use musical instruments, as David did, and I have to ask:

WHO decreed the LAWThou shalt NOT uses musical instruments in worship? !

A few years back, one from that man-made religion played a guitar and sang at a christmas talent show; and, again, I have to ask:

Aren’t we to WORSHIP The LORD ALL of our awake moments, from the time we arise, and as we walk in The WAY, and until we lie down to sleep??? When is it appropriate to NOT WORSHIP The LORD and use a musical instrument? !

And, furthermore, “Why do atheists celebrate christmas?! (as does world renowned Atheist Richard Dawkins?! It’s ANTI-CHRIST Pagan! That’s why.)

The absurdity of senseless religion appalls me! The WORD of The LORD tells us very clearly HOW to worship HIM and very clearly the thing to NOT do!! But no. In the words of an elderly woman, who started reading my book, MEMOIRS OF A SOJOURNER, “I tried to read your book; BUT, it is TOO MUCH BIBLE.” She, of all people, was the mother of my friend whom I spent weekends with, as a child, and in whose household we had bedtime Bible reading and prayer! And my book is “TOO MUCH BIBLE? ! She has since passed away and I would NOT want to be in her proverbial shoes.

For most folks, Deuteronomy 5 and First Corinthians 12 & 13 is TOO MUCH BIBLE. And yet, as I read these chapters, this morning, ABBA FATHER grabbed me by the-scruff-of-my-neck and reminded me of HIS directive for me to be patient, “abide in faith, hope, and charity.” Often, MaraDale reminds me about my mission in LIFE, as being like our neighbor’s apple tree: It produces fruit and has no clue what happens to that fruit. Some is eaten by birds, while still in the tree. Some fall to the ground and is eaten by squirrels. Some fall to the ground, get crushed and rot. Some get picked by people and enjoyed by genuine HUMAN BEINGS — and it is not for me to know what happens to the fruit which ABBA has called me to produce. I am just to produce for HIM. PERIOD. What your calling is, is not my business. I am only to edify you to the best of my ability. What does GOD expect of us? Deuteronomy 5 and First Corinthians 12 & 13 is the WHOLE enchilada in the proverbial nut shell! In the words of our eternal Brother Zach Bauer, “GO HOME. READ YOUR BIBLE.

Hebrew Words Defined

Salvation

Part One

by Brad Scott

We are going to spend the next few lessons discussing this last Hebrew word. We will then move on to some popular doctrinal concepts, where they came from, and how they got so screwed up. In the past few months I have chosen a handful of words that I thought were imperative to understand, scripturally, before we use them in any doctrinal studies. Salvation is certainly one of those terms. All my "Christian" life I have heard this term used. It is one of those English words that is used for more than just religious purposes, but none the less, conjures up religious thoughts when used. The scriptural meaning of this word has more in common with its "other worldly" use than it's modern application in the so-called church. I grew up in the Lutheran system, which rarely ever used the word. I spent part of the third decade of my life in the Baptist denomination. You can imagine how many times I heard it used there! Many times we would do our dutiful visitation and use that word a lot. "Are you saved?" That was quite popular. "Do you want to be saved?" This was the phrase that we longed to say all evening. It worked quite well, as a matter of fact. More than half the people we talked to certainly wanted to be saved. The majority of the people that we "led to the Lord" we never heard from again, but we left feeling good that they were "saved." I would imagine that if you asked most people who claimed to be Christians if they were saved, they would probably admit it. The problem with most Christians is you have to ask them!

Well enough sarcasm. What do you think Yeshua‘ meant when he said, "... salvation is of the Jews?" What did Sha’ul mean when he said, "... all Israel will be saved?" And finally, what did Mattityahu (Matthew) mean when he told us that we were to call Him Yeshua'; for He shall save His people from their sins. I can tell you what is the typical modern interpretation of this. To the modern Christian, salvation is proclaiming out loud that Jesus is the Christ, confessing that you are a sinner and wearing a WWJD band around your wrist. But true salvation is another concept that is assumed in the New Testament. The language frequently used in the New Testament is brought forth from its understood use in the Tanakh. When Mattityahu said that He would save us from our sins, the audience is not told what "save" means or what "sin" means. Why? Because there are 39 books, (or 24 books or 22 books, depending on which translation you are reading,) that have fully explained what these two words mean. So let us go back to the New Testament dictionary (i.e. Tanakh) to gain an understanding of the fullness of this very important word.

We are going to focus on two particular ways that this word saved is used. One is the root of the word salvation, which is the word 'save' or 'to save'. I have stated in a previous study that the word "Jesus" is an English translation of the Greek word `Iesou (Ίησοΰς). This Greek word is a transliteration of the Hebrew word Yeshua'. The word in Hebrew for salvation is yeshu`ah (ישוּעה), which is feminine. Yeshua' (ישוּע) is the masculine form. When writing this word, I, as many others do, simply write it as Yeshua'. I am not one of those organizations that quibble over pronouncing His name the correct way. My point here is not how to spell it but what this word means to YHVH's people. The root of the word salvation is yasha`, or save. As we have said before, nearly all Hebrew nouns have verbal roots which set the foundation for all the cognates. The words save, deliver, preserve, and help are how this word is usually translated. The word yasha` literally means to open, or to be wide. You will see the application of this as we go. One of the areas that I have not ventured into at this point is the divine deliverance of the letters of Torah. From the early patriarchs to the modern Jewish scholars, the individual letters of the Hebrew aleph-bet are considered to be divinely ordained and put in just the perfect order by YHVH. Each meaning behind each letter of a word forms a complete meaning of the word when put together. (I would recommend our CD series "AlephBet: the Building Blocks of Life" for some elementary introduction to this exciting study. For further study I would recommend Rabbi Michael Munks' "The Wisdom of the Hebrew Alphabet".) The word yeshua' contains three consonants which form the word. These consonants are the yod (י), the shin (ש), and the ayin (ע). Each of these letters has a primitive form and a primitive meaning behind each one. The primitive forms are not in use today. They formed the basis for the early round script which eventually became the modern more "square" look. The early form of the yod looked like a hand, and it's meaning was a deed or action. The early form of the shin was teeth, and it's meaning was to consume or destroy. The early form of the ayin was an eye, and it's meaning was to cast your eyes or to look upon. To the Torah observant early Hebrews, this order of the letters helped to form their understanding of the meaning of the whole word. To be saved was to begin with an action or deed, a rescue followed by a destroying of the thing you were rescued from, ultimately concluded by a devotion, or casting your eyes upon, that which delivered you. I hope and pray that as we go you will see this order. I pray that you will see that in Hebrew thinking (Old Testament revelation), salvation always involved the whole person. The foundation of our trust never divided up the person into three parts. To the mind of the writers of scripture, the person is echad or one. I will elaborate on this later. So, let's go to the first occurrence of the word save.

Shemot (Exodus) 2:16-17 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

Here is the first example of someone being saved. The daughters of the priest of Midian had come to water their flock, but shepherds had come to not only take their water, but to drive them away. Moshe takes action and rises up against them and drives them away. This is implied from the use of the word vayyaqam (קוּם) which means to rise up as in against. Moshe then gives the women what the thieves came to take. The result is that one of them is given to Moshe in marriage. Imagine a Hebrew man goes into the territory of the nations, drives off thieves (see Yochanan (John) 10:10), gives his future bride water from the well, and takes her as his own! He then has the chutzpah to go back to his own people with her to a life contrary to her nature, and takes her out on a date to a Passover Seder. Hmmmm.

Let's look at another use of this word.

Shemot 14:13-14, 27-31 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of YHVH which he will show to you today; for the Egyptians whom ye have seen today, ye shall see them again no more forever. YHVH shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace ... And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and YHVH overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea. And the waters returned and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them. But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. Thus YHVH saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel SAW the Egyptians dead upon the seashore. And Israel SAW that great work which YHVH did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared YHVH, and believed YHVH and his servant Moses.

Now, according to Shemot 3:17, YHVH told Moshe that He would deliver them out of Egypt and into a land flowing with milk and honey. We just learned that in between these two events He would destroy their enemy. This was concluded with Israel seeing or casting their eye on what YHVH had done.

We are just beginning to scratch the surface of this wonderful word. I pray that this particular study will profoundly change your view of what salvation really is. See you next time.

Shalom Alecheim! [Peace be upon you!]

Could it be that the Fall Biblical festivals celebrated by Jewish people around the world have amazing insight into the Return of our Messiah!? Most Christians are aware that it was on the appointed day of Passover that our Messiah was crucified, some are aware that it was the Biblical feast of First fruits that He was Resurrected and the appointed day of Shavuot 50 that the Holy Spirt was poured out on the church. Dr. Erez Soref dives into the Biblical Appointed days in the fall and uncovers how they celebrate the past deliverance and our Messiah's return to come!
