The Biblical Definition of “Stumbling Block”
Source: “Messiah – Volume 1 – Understanding His Life and Teachings In Hebraic Context” by Avi Ben Mordechai. This book is no longer available from Coming Home - A Biblical Hebraic Outreach Teaching Ministry from Avi Ben Mordechai. It is out of print.
NOTE: I have added my comments in square brackets as such [ ].
In Christian circles the term “stumbling block” is generally very obscure. It is usually defined as something you do or say that causes another Christian not to walk boldly in his newfound freedom in Christ. Other definitions also include things that are said or done to offend another person. A stumbling block or offense can have broad or narrow meanings depending on what culture and situation you happen to be in at the time. [Emphasis added]
In Hebraic circles, the term “stumbling block” is very specific. It is usually defined as something you do or say that causes a fellow Israelite to violate a positive commandment of G-d or to transgress a negative commandment of G-d. For example, if I, an Israelite, advise a fellow Israelite that he or she can work on the Sabbath, or work on the first or last day of a festival like Chag HaMatzot (Unleavened Bread), I have put a stumbling block in that person’s path, causing him to transgress a negative commandment of G-d. On the other hand, if I do not encourage a brother to wear tzitziot (tassels) on a four-cornered garment then I have put a stumbling block in his path causing him to violate a positive commandment because G-d said, “they shall make for themselves tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations.” [Emphasis added]
Again, if I gossip to someone about another (in Hebrew, Lashon Hara [Evil Tongue]) I have put a stumbling block in the path of the person hearing my gossip, potentially giving him cause to violate a negative commandment in Vayikrah (Leviticus) 19:16, “You shall not go about as a slanderer among your people.” Conversely, if I fail to teach my children the commandments of G-d, then I violate a positive commandment, “and you shall teach them diligently to your sons...” putting a stumbling block into their path so that they may depart from the Words of G-d.
There are hundreds of written commandments from G-d and hundreds more valid oral rulings from the rabbis that I can easily disregard or teach incorrectly in some way thus causing an offense to a fellow believer in Messiah. It is this idea that defines the B’rit Chadashah [New Testament] term “stumbling block.” From our biblical dictionary, Tanakh [Old Testament], we get these supporting passages: [Emphasis added]
Those who love Thy law (Torah) have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble. I hope for Thy salvation, O Lord, and do Thy commandments.
(Mizmor [Psalm] 119:165-166, [Emphasis added])
For My people have forgotten Me, they burn incense to worthless gods and they have stumbled from their ways, from the ancient paths, to walk in bypaths, not on a highway....
(Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 18:15, [Emphasis added])
“But as for you, you have turned aside from the way; you have caused many to stumble by the instruction (Torah); you have corrupted the covenant of Levi,” says the Lord of hosts. “So I also have made you despised and abased before all the people, just as you are not keeping My ways, but are showing partiality in the instruction (Torah).”
(Malachi 2:8-9, [Emphasis added])
Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right, and the righteous will walk in them, but transgressors will stumble in them.
(Hoshea 14:9, [Emphasis added])
Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and have put right before their faces the stumbling block of their iniquity. Should I be consulted by them at all?
(Yechezki’el [Ezekiel] 14:3, [Emphasis added])
The Word of G-d gives us clear definitions of what it means to stumble or to cause another to stumble. In this light we are able to fully understand the intent of Y’shua’s [Yeshua’s/Jesus’] words as HaMashiach [The Messiah], who set the commandments of G-d on a firm foundation:
But He turned and said to Peter, “get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
(Mattityahu [Matthew] 16:23, [Emphasis added])
Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!
(Mattityahu [Matthew] 18:7, [Emphasis added])
The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness....
(Mattitayhu [Matthew] 13:41, [Emphasis added])
In Mattitayhu [Matthew] 13:41, stumbling blocks and lawlessness are defined together. The term “lawlessness,” which sometimes appears as “iniquity,” is from the Greek word anomos (an’-om-os), Strong’s number G459. Its first definition from the Enhanced Strong’s Lexicon is: [Emphasis added]
Destitute of the Mosaic law.
If one lives away from the Mosaic Law and/or teaches others to live away from the Mosaic Law then one is lawless by sheer biblical definition and is also responsible for causing stumbling blocks. Supporting this idea in the day of judgment, G-d says the following in Revelation 2:14: [Emphasis added]
But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Balaam, who kept teaching Balak to put a stumbling block before the sons of Israel, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit acts of immorality.
Two stumbling blocks are mentioned above in bold type, and also appear as part of an expanded list for all Gentiles to beware of in Acts 15:20 and 29. Also in the Word of G-d, are found terms like “straight path” and “crooked path.” If one is walking on a straight path that means he is obeying the Torah both inwardly and outwardly. On the other hand, if one is on a crooked path then he is not walking according to the commandments of HaShem [The Name]. Here are some passages to help paint this picture in brighter, clearer colors: [Emphasis added]
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.
(Mishle [Proverbs] 3:6, [Emphasis added])
With weeping they shall come, and by supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk by streams of waters on a straight path in which they shall not stumble for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is My first-born.
(Yirmeyahu [Jeremiah] 31:9, [Emphasis added])
But Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze upon him, and said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?
(Acts 13:9 -10, [Emphasis added])
Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed.
(Hebrews 12:12-13, [Emphasis added])
[Also see all of Mishle (Proverbs) Chapter 2.]
A stumbling block is something said or done or the lack of something said or done that causes another to fail in his responsibility to keep the words of the Mosaic Torah. [Emphasis added]
Failure to walk in and/or teach about obedience to HaShem’s [The Name’s] Mosaic Torah is equivalent to stumbling or causing another to stumble. [Emphasis added]
I hope this sheds some light upon the Biblical definition of “Stumbling Block” compared to what man has defined “Stumbling Block” to be. It makes a big difference when we use the Bible as our dictionary. Especially the Old Covenant/Testament since the New Covenant/Testament did not exist at the time Yeshua/Jesus was here.

MY GREATEST SPIRITUAL GIFT
September 19, 2020
Psalm 13 – 19 Romans 4 – 6
In the proverbial nutshell: the desire and ability to be obedient — to shema (hear & obey) — my eternal FATHER’s Instructions/TORAH for the WAY, the TRUTH, and the LIFE most abundant, as Yeshua, the TORAH made flesh, taught us — is my greatest SPIRITUAL gift. Within this most precious gift, all else is added unto me. For those who object, I have to ask: Which of our FATHER’s Commandments do you NOT like?
Our eternal Brother, David, is explaining the value of this, my greatest GIFT (and yours if you so choose). As David comes close to YHVH and LIVES in the WAY of ELohim according to the TRUTH of TORAH, David finds the green pasture (of Psalm 23), surrounded by a hedge of protection from enemies, plenty to eat and cozy bedding within ABBA’s watchful realm. David is saying:
Psalm 19:7 The TORAH [H8451] of YeHoVaH [H3068] is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of YeHoVaH is sure, making wise the simple [even me, the simplest of the simple :o))].
As we turn the pages to the book of Romans, at first glance, it would seem that Apostle Paul is pooh-poohing the TORAH; but, is he? My first AH-HA moment was when I learned the difference between TORAH and Takanot — both are translated into English as “law.”
Let’s be specific: TORAH is our Instructions for LIFE in YHVH’s Kingdom (penned by Moses); juxtaposed with the Takanot which is the laws of the Pharisees (under the authority of and influenced by that) of Greco Roman (even the Vatican today) laws of man (of which we have over 4 MILLION laws in America today!). These differing “laws” have very different holidays, foods, mindsets, GOD/gods, etcetera. Shaul/Paul was a staunch Pharisee with a zeal for the Takanot, which gave him religious authority to SLAUGHTER BELIEVERS, as myself and my eternal Brother William Tyndale who said, just before the church of Rome burned him at the stake, “I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy who drives the plough to know more of the scriptures than he does.” When the TORAH made flesh (John 1:14) even Yeshua/Jesus spoke to Shaul on the road to Damascus, a blinding flash of the obvious happened! Apostle Paul then writes about these things, of which Apostle Peter says:
2 Peter 3:16 As also in all his [Paul’s] epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures [the OLD Testament, which was the ONLY Scriptures they had then and which still apply to us NOW — of which, when religions pooh-pooh those SCRIPTURES, it is], unto their own destruction.
Over the decades, I have heard many sermons on Romans chapters 4 & 5; but, seldom do they preach Romans 6 which begins:
Romans 6:1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
Romans 6:2 GOD forbid. [!] How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
How do we even know what sin is? If we read it all, Paul explains:
Romans 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the TORAH sin? God forbid. [!] Nay, I had not known sin, but by the TORAH: for I had not known lust, except the TORAH had said, Thou shalt not covet [a direct quote of TORAH, Exodus 20:17 !].
As our eternal Brother, Joseph, invited his brothers, who sold him into slavery and are now standing before Joseph who is second in command of the world’s most powerful empire, as Joseph proved who he really was (and I strongly believe Joseph’s circumcision was his PROOF of their mutual family Covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob/Israel, their Dad, not that of Egyptian religion) — as simply as I know how, in my simple tabernacle of flesh, I beckon you to come near, to the circumcision of my heart, as I reveal to you my GIFT of The HOLY SPIRIT. This GIFT became available to you and me at SHAVUOT/Pentecost — when the same flaming tongues of FIRE that gave the Commandments at Mt Sinai came down on Mt Moriah (the temple mount in Jerusalem) and these same flaming tongues of FIRE wrote these same Commandments into the hearts of men, no longer merely written on tablets of stone. This HOLY SPIRIT gave mankind the desire AND ability to keep ABBA’s Instructions for LIFE in HIS Kingdom. If we go to the back of the book, we get a preview of THAT Kingdom; and, please notice that there are no Gentile gates into that Kingdom, only Israeli!
Revelation 21:12 And [John saw this Kingdom, which (future tense)] had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:
Sorry — NO Vatican gates, no PROTESTant gates... only Israeli gates — SELAH! MUSE!! PAUSE & THINK; because,
Zechariah 8:23 Thus saith YeHoVaH of hosts; In those days [which are knocking on our door!] it shall come to pass, that ten [Gentile] men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt [H3671 tzitzit = the hem of Yeshua’s garment that the woman with the issue of blood grabbed hold of in Matthew 9:20 & Luke 8:43-44, she grabbed the tzitzit] of HIM that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that ELohim is with you.
O! They say... all that tzitzit stuff was “nailed to the cross.” ya think? O!! contraire!!! Zechariah and Paul, and the ENTIRE Holy Bible are speaking of these last days and preparing us for the SHOUT of The BRIDEGROOM KING of Kings and LORD of Lords our CREATOR Who spoke this entire universe into existence and Instructed HIS people to wear tzitzit as a reminder of WHO HE IS; and yet, most of christenDUMB REBELS... exactly as did Korah and his bunch who were swallowed by the Earth, when it opened into the deep abyss! WHY? Because they REFUSED to wear tzitzit — please do not let the numbered chapter break (which is not in the Dead Sea Scrolls) of 16 break your train-of-thought. Let’s look at it:
Numbers 15:37 And YeHoVaH spake unto Moses, saying,
Num 15:38 Speak unto the children of Israel [and all of us mixed multitude of strangers of various languages who came out of Egypt with Israel], and bid them that they make them fringes [tsitsiyot] in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe [tzitzit] of the borders a ribband of blue:
Num 15:39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe [tzitzit], that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of YeHoVaH, and do them; and that ye seek not after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:
Num 15:40 That ye may remember, and do all my commandments, and be holy unto your ELohim. [was this done away with? see 1 Peter 1:15-16 But as HE which hath called you is Holy, so be ye Holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye Holy; for I am Holy. “it is written” WHERE? We just read it in Numbers 15:40! and what’s more:]
Num 15:41 I am YeHoVaH your [never changing] ELohim, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your ELohim: I am YeHoVaH your ELohim.
Skip the 16 man-made chapter break and get THE-REST-OF-THE-STORY:
Num 16:1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, [with most of religion TODAY] took men:
Num 16:2 And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the assembly, famous in the congregation, men of renown:
Num 16:3 And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?
Long story short, Korah and his bunch refused to make and wear tzitzit, as Moses just told the people at the end of the previous chapter! Hence, the Earth opened up and swallowed ALL those REBELLIOUS holier-than-thou *#&#*! EXACTLY as the religious leaders of today. WOW!
O! By-the-way, did our Apostle Paul work for Cabela’s, making outfitter TENTS?
Acts 18:3 And because he [Paul] was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.
How many, as HIGHLY educated as our Apostle Paul, have industrial manufacturing labor jobs? Was Shaul/Paul an industrialist or a religionist? Are ya sure Paul didn't make teepees? :o))) I’m sure. Biblically, “tents” are sukkot, huts, tabernacles, coverings. In this case, these are most likely very portable prayer shawls, tallit coverings, with tzitzit on the 4 corners; and, DR. Luke speaks of Tekhelet (Hebrew: תְּכֵלֶת purple/blue dye) sold by Lydia (Acts 16) a Believer in Yeshua, and this dye was most likely for that “ribband of blue” in each of the 4 tzitzit on the 4 corners of each tallit Apostle Paul made:
Do people of other languages take hold of the tzitzit on our garments today, as Zechariah foretold? I love the Jews very much, even though I am not a Jew; but, my MESSIAH IS! If I may draw your attention to a recent experience: About 2 years ago, MaraDale and I were in a larger city shopping when a Chinese lady came up to me — took hold of my tzitzit and in broken English said, “Tzitzit.” We had the most AWEsome visit! She LOVES YESHUA :o))) Who knows where she is now? All I know is that she will be at the same table as MaraDale and me when we partake of the Marriage Supper of The LAMB!!! HalleluYAH!!! another exponential amplification of my GREATEST GIFT!
Maybe I’m “graffed in among them” (Romans 11) ya think? :o)))
YeHoVaH IS adding HIS blessing to the reading of HIS entire Holy Bible. Amen.
Yom Teruah tov & Shabbat shalom,

Wide Is The Gate 2 (1 of 5) The Emerging New Christianity: Fundamental Evangelicalism
In Volume Two, Caryl Matrisciana covers these topics:
Youth Movements & The Social Gospel
Contemplative Mystical Movement
Volume 2 Guests include: Caryl Matrisciana, Eric Barger, Jason Carlson, Mike Gendron, Sarah Leslie, Jan Markell, Tom McMahon, Johanna Michaelsen, Brenda Nickel, Roger Oakland, Chris Quintana, Warren Smith, Paul Wilkinson, and Ray Yungen. This eye-opening production contains information vital to the defense of biblical Christianity. Picking up where Volume 1 left off, this powerful series uses exclusive interviews with well-known authors and experts to examine the intrusion of the 60's and 70's New Age Movement into the professing church. Viewers will see how pagan eastern mysticism has morphed over the last four decades—from its repackaging as the "self help" psychology and holistic health movements of the 80s, to its seeker friendly, megachurch appearance in the 90s, to its coming out in the 21st century as "the new spirituality." Today's new brand of Christianity has a different gospel and is targeting the younger generation with a so-called hip, cool, experiential spirituality, much of which is embracing the mysticism of Roman Catholicism with its ecumenical philosophy of uniting people from all faiths to work together to bring about a new world of peace and harmony around the souls of unsuspecting youth. Learn what Scripture teaches about the times we live in, the ways in which Christians are being seduced away from biblical Truth, and the methods used by the New Spirituality to usher in the counterfeit kingdom of God on earth. It is often understood that Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is considered a day of fasting. But is this simply tradition or a commandment? So, is Yom Kippur a day of fasting by man's tradition or God's commandment?
Is Yom Kippur a Day of Fasting?
It is often understood that Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement is considered a day of fasting. But is this simply tradition or a commandment.
In the Jerusalem Talmud, the Jewish oral law, Yom Kippur is referred to as Tzoma Rabbah, "the great fast" (j. Peah 7:4), and in another place as simply Tzoma, "fast" (j. Bava Batra 9:7).
The Hebrew word for fast is tsum (H6684). It means to refrain from eating for a period of time. This could include any drink as well.
However, the Torah does not specifically call us to fast for Yom Kippur, but to “anah” ourselves.
In Leviticus 16:29, 23:27 (and Numbers 29:7), the word anah (H6907) is used, which refers to a “humbling (or mortifying, afflicting) one’s soul.”
This has been interpreted as including, in addition to fasting, refraining from bathing, anointing, wearing leather shoes, and sexual relations (Yad, Shevitat Asor 1:5). These are forbidden only by rabbinic legislation (Tosafot, Yoma 7b) and not by specific instructions found in the Torah.
We know what it means to “fast” (tsum), but what does it mean to “afflict” (anah) ourselves?
The Hebrew word “anah” appears about 79 times in the TANAKH (Old Testament).
We can find the first occurrence in Genesis 15:13:
Then the LORD (YHWH) said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted (anah) for four hundred years.
Here we see how being “afflicted” is synonymous with being a “servant” or placed under the “authority” of another.
In this light, it is not very positive, because it is unwillful bondage. It is not by their own desire that they become a servant, but circumstances outside of their control, not of their own free will.
The next instance of the word is similar:
But Abram said to Sarai, “Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please.” Then Sarai dealt harshly (anah) with her, and she fled from her.
Again, under the authority of another…in this illustration, the master has the right to reward or punish the servant.
So Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, “Thus says the LORD (YHWH), the Elohim of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble (anah) yourself before me? Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Again, another use meaning placing oneself under the authority of another…
It can also be used in context of a marriage, related to vows and binding. Keep this in mind for later in the teaching.
Any vow and any binding oath to afflict (anah) herself, her husband may establish, or her husband may make void.
Our Creator uses the word with us…meaning to humble us, or to make us low.
…who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.
This is a test as to whether we will follow His instructions or not, His Torah.
It is good for me that I was afflicted (anah), that I might learn your statutes.
I know, O LORD (YHWH), that your rules are righteous, and that in faithfulness you have afflicted (anah) me.
See how humbling ourselves is directly correlated with following His instructions.
In these instances, “anah” is positive, as it is us willfully placing ourselves under the authority of our Creator.
This is why the Torah does not focus, or really, even mention fasting as it relates to Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is designed to encourage us and call us to humble ourselves…to make ourselves low before Him, in obedience to Him.
Meaning this…though it is always important to follow Him and be obedient…it is most important to be sure that we are following His authority on Yom Kippur.
Because of this, many believe, that Yom Kippur will be the last day to repent and appeal at the time of the beginning of the Day of the Lord.
So, on Yom Kippur, it is of utmost importance to focus on Him and His ways…to humble ourselves, to prostrate ourselves, to make ourselves low…to only be following His instructions, and not our own ways.
Now, here is the question.
If we are to afflict ourselves on Yom Kippur, is there a particular type of obedience that our Creator brings to our attention on this day?
In other words, does YHWH define for us the manner of affliction that He expects from us.
We already mentioned that YHWH makes no mention of fasting as it relates to Yom Kippur…but He does mention another type of obedience related to the affliction several times.
Watch how many times He tells us that we should rest and that this particular appointed time (moedim) is a Sabbath.
And the LORD (YHWH) spoke to Moses, saying, “Now non the tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. It shall be for you a time of holy convocation, and you shall afflict (anah) yourselves and present a food offering to the LORD (YHWH) .
Ok…so we should afflict ourselves…what does that mean?
And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD (YHWH) your Elohim. For whoever is not afflicted (anah) on that very day shall be cut off from his people.
Do you see how working or not working on Yom Kippur is related to being afflicted or not afflicted?
In case we miss it…YHWH continues and to say it again in verse 30.
And whoever does any work on that very day, that person I will destroy from among his people.
Again, being afflicted (anah) is being related to not working…a Sabbath.
But, in case we missed two times…YHWH says it again in verse 31.
You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.
And in case we missed it three times, YHWH says it again for a fourth time in verse 32…afflicting yourself on Yom Kippur is related to resting on the Sabbath.
It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict yourselves. On the ninth day of the month beginning at evening, from evening to evening shall you keep your Sabbath.”
So the affliction that YHWH desires from us on Yom Kippur is a day of rest, not necessarily fasting.
Make no mistake though, fasting is a type of affliction. Meaning, all fasting is affliction, but not all affliction is fasting.
But I, when they were sick—I wore sackcloth; I afflicted myself with fasting; I prayed with head bowed on my chest.
So, it is not that one can not fast on Yom Kippur. We would simply urge those in the faith to realize that Yom Kippur is not so much about fasting, if it is about fasting at all, but about obeying our Creator, about humbling ourselves, making sure that we rest on that very important day.
Some like to point out Isaiah 58 to further illustrate this problem…
It makes no sense to fast on the Yom Kippur Sabbath, yet cause others to work. It is missing the whole point of this very important day.
Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it?’ Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.
YHWH states that they were seeking their own pleasure in making others work for them, despite their fasting…yet they were confused as to why YHWH did not recognize their fasting. They missed the point.
The point of it all is to humble yourself in obedience. They should not have been making others work on that particular day.
Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD (YHWH)?
“If you turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day (which was defined as others working for you earlier), and call the Sabbath a delight and the holy day of the LORD (YHWH) honorable; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly; then you shall take delight in the LORD (YHWH), and I will make you ride on the heights of the earth; I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob your father, for the mouth of the LORD (YHWH) has spoken.”
So, in conclusion, though we can fast on Yom Kippur, and though fasting is a form of affliction, it does not appear to be the form of affliction our Creator desires us to focus on…the important matters of Yom Kippur seem to focus on repenting and humbling, and leading to full obedience, centered around afflicting ourselves in a Sabbath rest.
There is one more interesting thing to consider.
The root meaning of the word “to afflict” or “anah” seems to also have a relationship or linguistic root with the Hebrew word for “marital rights” or “o’na” (H5722).
If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, or her marital rights (o’na).
If our Lord returns on a future Day of Trumpets, it is possible that we might be taken into the bridal chambers (Isaiah 26:19-21) and the wedding may occur on Yom Kippur, just ten days later, as that day appears to be linguistically related to marital rights, and vows. Then perhaps, the wedding feast would occur during Sukkot, just five days later. It makes you wonder…

Bible Reading for Yom Kippur
Yom Kippur also known as the Day of Atonement is observed on the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishri which falls in the Gregorian months of September-October.
26 And YHWH spoke to Mosheh, saying, 27 “On the tenth day of this [Hebrew] seventh month [of Tishri - September/October] is the Day of Atonement [Yom Kippur]. It shall be a set-apart [Holy/Dedicated] gathering for you. And you shall afflict your beings, and shall bring an offering made by fire to YHWH. 28 And you do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before YHWH your Elohim [Mighty One/God]. 29 For any being who is not afflicted on that same day, he shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any being who does any work on that same day, that being I [YHWH] shall destroy from the midst of his people. 31 You do no work – a law forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 32 It is a Sabbath of rest to you, and you shall afflict your beings. On the ninth day of the [Hebrew] month at evening [which starts a new Hebrew day], from evening to evening, you observe your Sabbath.”
Yom Kippur teaches us about the literal Second Coming of Messiah Yeshua [Christ Jesus] when He sets His foot on the Mount of Olives.
And in that day His [Yeshua's] feet shall stand upon the Mount of Olives, which faces Yerushalayim [Jerusalem] on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, a very great valley, and half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south.

Pauline Paradox Series: Part 2 – The Paul You Never Knew
Join us in part 2 of the Pauline Paradox Series. The common position of mainstream theology utilizes snippets from Paul to supposedly prove that God changed His law. Now is the time to learn the real Paul, the Paul you never knew.
NOTE: If you missed Pauline Paradox Series: Part 1 - Is the Majority Ever Wrong?, it is below.
The Pauline Paradox - Part 1: Is the Majority Ever Wrong? - 119 Ministries
If the law of God has not changed, then how could so many people be wrong, and for so long? Is that even possible? Does it even make sense to question established mainstream theology and test it to the Word of God? In this teaching, we answer such questions, and introduce the first video in The Pauline Paradox Series.
The Feast of Trumpets is not only a time in which Heaven makes announcements, but the King draws near to hear from His people. In the light of the Color Revolution that is being planned in America by the radical left, the Days of Awe can be used by the Remnant to turn the tide. To clues we need are found in Genesis 1 in three Hebrew words: tohuw, bohuw, and male’. Find out what all this means in this week’s timely podcast!

Part One explained that the phrase “kingdom of heaven” has a variety of usages. While most understand it to refer to the coming Kingdom of God, a lesser-known usage applies to the physical Kingdom of Israel, founded by God in heaven and ruled over by the same.
The previous article also stressed the necessity of recognizing to whom Jesus was speaking while giving the parables in Matthew 13. The audience, made up of the remnant of Judah, helps us comprehend the scope of His instructions. Even though the people of Judah and Galilee did not have “ears to hear” in a spiritual sense, they still received some true instruction from their unacknowledged King, just as the leadership perceived that Jesus was speaking about them in the Parable of the Two Sons and the Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers (Matthew 21:23-44).
The Parable of the Wheat and the Tares
The second parable of Matthew 13 concerns wheat and tares sown together in the same field by different actors:
Another parable He put forth to them, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field; but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared. So the servants of the owner came and said to him, ‘Sir, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ The servants said to him, ‘Do you want us then to go and gather them up?’ But he said, ‘No, lest while you gather up the tares you also uproot the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”’” (Matthew 13:24-30)
As with the Parable of the Sower, Jesus later defines His symbols to His disciples (Matthew 13:38). The field, He says, is “the world.” While there can still be an application of this parable to the church, Jesus’ immediate audience was “great multitudes” (Matthew 13:2, 34, 36), and the scope was “the world,” rather than the limited assembly of called-out ones.
The good seeds are “the sons of the kingdom.” This phrase appears just one other time, in an earlier teaching in which the “sons of the kingdom” are cast into outer darkness (Matthew 8:11-12). Jesus used this phrase after encountering more faith in a Gentile centurion than in Israel (Matthew 8:10). In that instance, the “sons of the kingdom” are Israelites without faith. In the Parable of the Wheat and Tares, though, the Son of Man plants the “sons of the kingdom,” and they are revealed as righteous and glorified at the end of the age. Then, all who “offend, and those who practice lawlessness” (Matthew 13:41) will be gathered out of His Kingdom—at that time, the whole world (see Revelation 11:15).
Jesus defines the tares as “the sons of the wicked one.” While it is common to interpret this parable and its players strictly in terms of the church, consider that both God and Satan have had “sons” from the very beginning, long before the founding of the church in Acts 2. Abel lived by faith, but Cain, the first murderer, bore the spiritual image of his father, Satan (see John 8:44). Seth likewise was of the “good seed,” as were Enoch, Noah, and others. God planted in the world all these righteous men, who had to contend with the sons of the Adversary.
Recall that these parables come after a verbal altercation with the Pharisees in which Jesus calls them a “brood of vipers” (Matthew 12:34), indicating they were offspring of the serpent—sons of Satan—because they bore his spiritual image. John the Baptist also dubs the Pharisees and Sadducees a “brood of vipers,” implying they will be burned like the tares (Matthew 3:7-12). In John 8:44, Jesus tells the Pharisees that they were of their father the Devil, just another way of saying “sons of the wicked one.” He uses parallel imagery in Matthew 15:13, again regarding the Pharisees: “Every plant which My heavenly Father has not planted will be uprooted.”
Jesus says that “while men slept,” the “enemy came and sowed tares” (Matthew 13:25). The Bible often uses sleep as a symbol of obliviousness, non-awareness, or inattention. As such, it is frequently a negative symbol, often coinciding with lethargy, apathy, and letting down in one’s duties (see Proverbs 6:4-10; 24:30-34).
Within Israel, God appointed watchmen who were not merely to keep an eye out for approaching armies but were also to monitor the nation’s moral condition. In Isaiah 56:10, though, God vents His displeasure with these servants: “His watchmen are blind, they are all ignorant; they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber” (emphasis ours throughout). Instead of staying focused for the sake of the nation, “they are greedy dogs which never have enough. And they are shepherds who cannot understand; they all look to their own way, every one for his own gain, from his own territory” (verse 11).
Those who should have sounded the alarm about the problems creeping into the nation before the captivity were—as we would say—asleep at the switch! Focused on their own concerns, they allowed ungodly elements to take root, leading to the nation’s spiritual downfall. We will see more of this later.
Jesus ends the parable’s explanation with, “Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” (Matthew 13:43). Similarly, Daniel 12:3 says the “wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.” This glorification is also linked with the “harvest” in John 5:28-30. This end-time harvest is not limited to righteous individuals who lived from AD 31 onward—that is, the church—but includes all who have lived and died by faith, beginning with righteous Abel. As Hebrews 11:40 explains, all the true sons of the Kingdom, planted throughout history, will be made perfect at the same time.
Certainly, this parable can apply within the assembly of believers, for the New Testament is replete with warnings about false teachers and false brethren. Yet the principle is not limited to the church. The Pharisees were “sons of the wicked one”—and thus tares—even before Christ founded His church. The parable warns that not everyone who appears to be under the dominion of God is actually of God. The Pharisees and other leaders defied God’s sovereign authority, but He commands His servants to leave Satan’s offspring in place until the conclusion of His purpose.
