The Biblical Definition of “Faith

Source: “Messiah – Volume 1 – Understanding His Life and Teachings In Hebraic Context” by Avi Ben Mordechai. This book is no longer available from Coming Home - A Biblical Hebraic Outreach Teaching Ministry from Avi Ben Mordechai. It is out of print.

NOTE: I have added my comments in square brackets as such [ ].

FAITH [Belief]

Two places out of a volume of biblical passages are listed to biblically define faith [belief]:

Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within him; But the righteous will live by his faith [belief]. (Hebakkuk 2:4) [Emphasis mine]
Now faith [belief] is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. (Hebrews 11:1) [Emphasis mine]

Both of these passages are linked to one primary idea in Judaism: action [I will add here that this action also applies to all true believers in Yeshua/Jesus and not just to the Jews.]. A person who says with words, “I have faith [belief],” but does not prove that faith [belief] by deeds or works of light is nothing more than a conversationalist or one who is given over to much talk. [One can tell what a person really believes by what they do and not by what they say.”] Y’shua’s [Yeshua’s/Jesus’] brother Ya’acov [Jacob—also known as James in the New Testament] expanded on this idea in the Brit Chadashah [New/Renewed Covenant]:

Even so faith [belief], if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. (Ya’acov [James] 2:17)
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith [belief] without works is dead. (Ya’acov 2:26) [1]

In Jewish biblical and rabbinic literature, the concept behind faith [belief] is always action; it never stands on its own as a mental exercise. Faith [belief] comes from the Hebrew term אמוּנה, emunah which means firmness, fidelity and steadiness. In Hebraic thinking, the very heart of faith [belief] is faithfulness [belief by actions] which is linked to the Hebrew root אמת emet meaning truth. Faith [belief] and truth are two halves of a whole concept. Faith [belief] is best described as trusting faithfulness [belief by actions] in G-d [YHWH—Yahweh] which in turn leads to practicing the truth of the Torah. Scripturally, if we have faith [belief] in G-d [YHWH—Yahweh] then we will also have trusting faithfulness [belief by actions] in Him and live faithfully by His truth—the Torah. Here is a sampling of passages from our Tanakh [Old Testament] dictionary on the Hebrew word emunah which means trust, faithfulness [belief by actions], faith [belief], and trusting faithfulness [belief by actions]:

Then He [YHWH – Yahweh] said, “I will hide My face from them, I will see what their end shall be; for they are a perverse generation, sons in whom is no faithfulness [belief by actions].” (D’varim [Deuteronomy] 32:20) [Emphasis mine]
Many a man proclaims his own loyalty, but who can find a trustworthy man (literally a man of faith [belief])? (Mishle [Proverbs] 20:6 [Emphasis mine]
Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My [YHWH – Yahweh] servants the prophets, daily rising early and sending them. Yet they [the nation of Israel] did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but stiffened their neck; they did evil more than their fathers...And you shall say to them, “This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God or accept correction; truth (Hebrew: faith [belief]/faithfulness) has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.” (Yirmeyahu [Jeremiah] 7:25-28) [Emphasis mine]
Listen to me, O Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, put your trust (Hebrew: faith [belief]/faithfulness) in the Lord your God, and you will be established. Put your trust (faith [/belief]) in His [YHWH’s—Yahweh’s] prophets and succeed.” (D’vrei HaYamim Bet [2 Chronicles] 20:20) [Emphasis mine]
…If you will not believe (Hebrew: have faith), you surely shall not last. (Yeshayahu [Isaiah] 7:9) [Emphasis mine]

As you can see, G-d [YHWH—Yahweh] defines “faith” [belief] in the context of faithfulness [belief by actions]; but again, faithfulness [belief by actions] to what? In the passages quoted above, it states with trust in G-d [YHWH—Yahweh] and ends in keeping His Commandments (Hebrew: mitzvoth); the context in each verse bears this out as we learn from David in Mizmor [Psalm] 119:29-30:

Remove the false way from me, and graciously grant me Thy law (Torah). I have chosen the faithful [belief by actions] way (way of faith [belief]—Hebrew is emunah); I have placed Thine ordinances before me. [Emphasis mine]

Numerous passages in the Tanakh [Old Testament] reveal that to express “faith” [belief] in G-d [YHWH—Yahweh] is to show faithfulness [belief by actions] to His teachings:

My eyes shall be upon the faithfulness [belief by actions] of the land, that they may dwell with me; He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me. (Mizmor [Psalm] 101:6 [Emphasis mine]

Here, in Hebrew, the word “faithful” is a derivative of amen (truly) which is also connected to emet (truth) and emunah (faith [/belief]). Since the word “faith”[belief] is linked to walking in truth (meaning walking blamelessly), which is always defined as walking in the way of Torah, it is thus understood, according to our biblical dictionary, that one who professes faith [belief] in G-d [YHWH—Yahweh]. This is why we read in Luke 1:6:

And they (Elishiva and Z’kharyah) were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

Similarly, Dani’el (9:13) understood that the Israelite’s lack of faith [belief] (resulting in walking in iniquity [lawlessness] and not walking in the commandments of the Torah) had brought on all their calamity. [This same calamity has been and still is being played out with Christianity because of their “iniquity/Lawlessness/Torahlessness.] This is understood in context by the Hebrew word for truth (emunah):

As it is written in the law [the Torah] of Moses, all this calamity has come on us; yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our iniquity (turning from a life devoid of faithfulness [belief by actions] to Torah) and giving attention to Thy truth. (Daniel 9:13) [Emphasis mine]

In the Talmud, this teaching is found in tractate Shabbat 119b:

Raba said: Jerusalem was destroyed only because men of faith [2] [belief] ceased therein: for it is said, Run ye to and fro in the streets of Jerusalem, and see now, and know, and seek in the broad place thereof, if ye can find a man, if there be any that doeth justly, that seeketh faithfulness [belief by actions]; and I will pardon her. [3]

And again, from Megillah 15a in the Talmud, we learn that to break faithfulness [belief by actions] to G-d’s covenant is to break faith [belief] with G-d:

And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam answered and said unto Ezra, “we have broken faith [belief] with our God and have married foreign women.” [4]

The idea of having faith [belief] in G-d and showing faithfulness [belief by actions] to His commandments ([Hebrew:] mitzvot) was so deeply ingrained in Jewish thought that it produced a stinging rabbinic definition of the term “sons of G-d:”

Now, according to both Abaye and Raba, how do they interpret this [verse]... “Ye are sons of the Lord your God”;...R. Meir said: when you behave as sons you are designated sons; if you do not behave as sons, you are not designated sons. R. Meir said: In both cases you are called sons,... for it is said, they are sottish [foolish, stupid] children; [5] and it is also said: They are children in whom is no faith [belief]. [6]

Sha’ul [Paul], in Romans 8:14 further developed this from Yechezk’el [Ezekiel] 36:27:

And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk [keep/do/obey] in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. (Yechezk’el [Ezekiel] 36:27) [Emphasis mine]
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, (those being caused to walk in G-d’s Laws based on Yechezk’el [Ezekiel] 36:27) these are sons of God. (Romans 8:14) [Emphasis mine]

If a person says “I have faith [belief],” but then says, “We’re no longer under the Law” and consequently has no conviction to observe the Mosaic Torah then the above passages are rendered invalid in their context. Certainly, Y’shua HaMashiach [Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah] did not consider this concept invalid:

Truly, truly, I [Yeshua/Jesus] say to you, he who believes in Me (from the Hebrew emunah— “acts on my words”), the works (works of the Torah) that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go to the Father. (Yochanan [John] 14:12) [Emphasis mine]

It is obvious from the words in the B’rit Chadashah [New Covenant/Testament] that “faith” or “belief” in Y’shua [Yeshua/Jesus] means faithfully receiving His Torah and that is the same Torah of Sinai; in having “faith” [belief] in G-d the result is faithfulness [belief by actions] to His instructions and that desire is not of yourself but is a gift of G-d!

Unfortunately, since a number of modern Bible translators have a “bias” against acting in faithfulness [belief by actions] to G-d’s divine Laws, they find ways to get around the obvious truth of faith’s [belief’s] real definition by playing a game of semantics. Allow me to show you.

In the King James Version of the “New Testament” the word “faith” appears 245 times, “faithful” appears only 54 times, and “faithfulness” does not appear at all. Other translations have similar statistics. Yet, all three words are expressed by the same Greek word pistis, Strong’s number 4102, and can be translated using any of the following terms:

  • Faith

  • Faithful

  • Faithfulness

  • Belief

  • Believe

  • Believing

  • Fidelity

Pistis is from the Greek verb peitho (pi’-tho), #3982, meaning:

  • To be induced to do something because you are persuaded.

  • To have confidence to do something because you are persuaded.

Now, if you apply these B’rit Chadashah [New/Renewed Covenant/Testament] definitions of “faith” (Pistis) and “persuasion” (Pitho) to the ancient biblical and rabbinic definitions of faith (emunah) and truth (emet), which Y’shua [Yeshua/Jesus] upheld, you will clearly see that there is a firm connection between “hearing” the Word of G-d and doing the Word of G-d. Y’shua [Yeshua/Jesus] reiterated this point:

Which one of you convicts Me [Yeshua/Jesus] of sin? If I speak truth (Torah), why do you not believe Me? (have faith [belief] in my teaching of Torah). He who is of God hears the words of God (Torah); for this reason you do not hear them (lack of faith [belief], faithfulness [belief by actions]), because you are not of God.” (Yochanan [John] 8:46-47) [Emphasis mine]

This was further advocated by Y’shua’s [Yeshua’s/Jesus’] brother Ya’acov [Jacob/James]:

But prove yourselves doers of the word (Torah), and not merely hearers who delude [to mislead the mind or judgment of; deceive] themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word (Torah) and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law (Torah), the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does. (Ya’acov [James] 1:22-25)

This concept of “hearing and doing” is Jewish to the core. [I will add here that this also applies to all true believers in Yeshua/Jesus.] It is called the shema (she’ma), meaning in Hebrew, “hear” with your heart, and is based on D’varim (Deuteronomy) Chapter 6:1-10.

In the Bible of Y’shua [Yeshua/Jesus], faith [belief] means faithfulness [belief by actions], and in most of the 245 cases in the B’rit Chadashah [New/Renewed Covenant/Testament] where the word “faith” [belief] is applied, it can also denote “faithfulness” [belief by actions] without violating biblical hermeneutics. These next two passages are examples:

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law [Torah]: justice and mercy and faithfulness [belief by actions].... (Mattityahu [Matthew] 23:23) (NASB) [Emphasis mine]
But the fruit of the Spirit [7] is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness [belief by actions].... (Galatians 5:22) (NASB) [Emphasis mine]

This leads to a relevant question involving B’rit Chadashah [New/Renewed Covenant/Testament] semantics: Who decides if the Greek word Pistis is to be translated “faith,” “faithful,” “faithfulness” or “believe”? After all, the words faith, faithful, faithfulness and believe are all derived from the same Greek word. Clearly, in Mattityahu [Matthew], 23:23, Y’shua [Yeshua/Jesus] is teaching “faithfulness” [belief by actions] to the Mosaic Law:

...For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, (rabbinic Oral Law) and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law (Written Law [/Torah]): justice and mercy and faithfulness [belief by actions]; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. [Emphasis mine]

Here, Y’shua HaMashiach [Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah] tells the P’rushim (Pharisees) to remain conscientious of rabbinic Oral Law (tithing mint, dill and cummin) [NOTE: Yeshua/Jesus is not endorsing the Rabbinic Oral law. He is pointing out their tithes of mint, dill and cumin have been acknowledged by Him but His emphasis is on obeying the Written Word over the Rabbinic Oral law.] without neglecting the Mosaic Written Law which requires justice, mercy and faithfulness [belief by actions] (Micah 6:8). The same principle of truth also applies to Galatians 5:22 which tells us what the fruit of the Spirit is:

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness [belief by actions]. [Emphasis mine]

Here, we learn that faith [belief] or faithfulness [belief by actions] is a fruit of the Spirit. Faithfulness to what? The Torah. Faith [belief] in whom? G-d. This truth matches G-d’s message in Yechezk’el (Ezekiel) 36:27:

And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk [keep/do/obey] in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. [Emphasis mine]

This also lines up with the truth of Y’shua’s [Yeshua’s/Jesus’] words in Yochanan [John] 16:13, concerning the giving of the Spirit:

But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth.... [Emphasis mine]

Biblically understood, faith [belief] in G-d yields faithfulness [belief by actions] to His Commandments, and His Spirit is given to enable us to keep those Commandments, thus causing us to walk in faith [belief]. Now, you might say, What about Avraham who simply had “faith” [belief] in B’reshith (Genesis) 15:6”? [8]

Then he (Avraham) believed (literally: had trusting faith [belief]) in the Lord; and He reckoned it to him as righteousness. [Emphasis mine]

The answer is quite simple: Avraham’s “belief” in G-d was a lifestyle of continued faithfulness [belief by actions] that found its ultimate fulfillment in his test to offer up Yitzchak [Isaac] (22:16-18). Avraham’s belief (faith) did not suddenly appear out of nowhere [9] as expressed by HaShem [The Name] to Yitzchak [Isaac] in B’reshith [Genesis] 26:5:

...Abraham obeyed Me [YHWH—Yahweh] and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes and My laws.

Above, notice the bold underlined words. In very clear terms in Hebrew, this is saying that Avraham heard, did and protected HaShem’s [The Name] observances, divine commandments, prescribed ordinances, and laws that Moshe later gave the sons of Israel in Written and Oral form [I do not promote nor condone the Rabbinic Oral laws. I only condone and promote the Written Law/Torah/YHWH’s Teachings and Instructions.]. Ya’acov HaTzadiq (James [/Jacob the Righteous]), Y’shua’s [Yeshua’s/Jesus’] brother, discussed this in 2:21-24:

Was not Abraham our father justified (made righteous) by works, when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith [belief] was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith [belief] was perfected....You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith [belief] alone. [Emphasis mine]

If Avraharn’s faith [belief] was perfected by his works then it stands to reason that one who is grafted into Avraham’s faith [belief] must then do the faith [belief] of Avraham.

The famous Rabbi Hirsch of late 19th-century Germany, wrote that Avraham’s life was one of continual faith [belief] in G-d. It was understood in this way because Avraham was known as one who spent much time teaching the heathen peoples about his One G-d and converting them to the Hebrew faith [belief]. [10] Consequently, when Avraharn said—

“O Lord God, what wilt Thou give me, since I am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?”...Since Thou hast given no offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir”—he was concerned that there would be no one to carry on his name and his commitment to the propagation of his faith (emunah).

Today, “faith [belief] in Jesus” is understood as an expression of spiritual zeal—an affected or exaggerated earnestness to trust that G-d will do something that either you want Him to do or He said He will do. Although this kind of trust plays an important role in our lives, what is lacking in Christian teaching is also the deeper truth behind the Hebraic concept of faith [belief]: faithfulness [belief by actions] in keeping the Commandments of G-d. This is fully supported in Hebrews 11:1:

Now faith [belief] is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

In context, Hebrews 11 as a whole deals with the faithful actions of men and women throughout Jewish history as they looked forward to the coming of Messiah. We know this from Hebrews 11:1, 13, and 39-40. These men and women of “faith” [belief] oftentimes clashed with the people of their own generations. These heroes’ desire to trust in G-d resulted in a desire to obey His Commandments, Decrees, and Promises, with the knowledge that they would receive their reward for faithfulness [belief by actions] in the future. In this light, Habakkuk 2:4 makes perfect sense:

Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith [belief] (faithfulness [belief by actions]). [Emphasis mine]

According to Habakkuk, the righteous will live not only by faith [belief] or trust in G-d, but also by faithfulness [belief by actions]. This statement can be rephrased like this: “Those who live with trust in G-d also live by their faithfulness [belief by actions] to His divine instructions, resulting in righteousness.”

[I hope this sheds some light upon the Biblical definition of “Faith/Belief” compared to what man has defined “Faith/Belief” to be. It makes a big difference when we use the Bible as our dictionary. Especially the Old Covenant/Testament since the New Covenant/Testament did not exist at the time Yeshua/Jesus was here.]

Wide Is The Gate 1 (2 of 5) The Emerging New Christianity: Biblical Christianity

In Volume One, Caryl Matrisciana covers these topics:

  • The Counterfeit Church

  • Biblical Christianity

  • Christianized New-Age Spirituality

  • The Evolving Old New-Age to New-Age Christianized Mysticism

Volume 1 Guests include Caryl Matrisciana, Jason Carlson, Eric Douma, Brian Flynn, Michael Gendron, Tom McMahon, Johanna Michaelsen, Roger Oakland, Chris Quintana, Warren Smith, Ray Yungen, and other cameos. Video journalist, Caryl Matrisciana, author of Out of India, interviews friends, well-known authors, and experts in this bold and challenging DVD. Caryl examines the intrusion of the 60’s and 70’s New Age Movement, steeped in its pagan eastern mysticism, and traces its morphing over the last four decades—from its repackaging as the “self help” psychology and holistic health movements of the 80s, to its seeker friendly, megachurch appearance in the 90s, to its coming out in the 21st century as “the new spirituality.” Today’s new brand of Christianity has a different gospel and is targeting the younger generation with a so-called hip, cool, experiential spirituality, much of which is embracing the mysticism of Roman Catholicism with its ecumenical philosophy of uniting people from all faiths to work together to bring about a new world of peace and harmony. The dangerous result of this new spirituality in the church is the rise of today’s “Christianized” occultism. It is stretching its tentacles around the souls of unsuspecting youth, setting them up for the lie that subjective emotions of “power” and “experience” are “feelings” to be held higher than an objective walk in the Christian faith, based on truth found in the pure Word of God. Learn what Scripture teaches about the times we live in, the ways in which Christians are being seduced away from biblical truth, and the methods used by the New Spirituality to usher in the counterfeit kingdom of God on earth. Excluded From the Assembly - Deuteronomy 23:1-8

Several groups of people are said to be excluded from the “assembly of YHWH”, and this leaves us with some questions. How can a loving Creator exclude anyone? Who all is included in this “assembly”? How can they be excluded in one verse but permitted in another?

KIB 272 – A New Song and a Fresh Grace

The term “sing a new song” is used only nine times in the Bible, yet it is packed with powerful prophetic meanings.  The prophetic significance of this term includes:

  • Releasing a fresh grace to overcome.

  • A cry for God to release judgment upon evil.

  • Making God the supreme and only King in one’s life.

  • A cry for God to change the course of history.

  • Our response to God’s deliverance.

It is time for the Almighty to release a new song and fresh grace into the end-time Remnant.

KIB 271 – The Birth Pains of Awakening the Assembly

In our day, the vanguard of the prophetic Remnant has awakened to righteousness, while the majority are still under the techno-sorcery induced slumber of Babylon (and the general assembly is near comatose)!  Ezekiel 14 provides a striking prophetic pattern of awakening and equipping the Remnant, even in the midst of judgment.  In the U.S. (and around the world), how far will the Almighty need to go to wake up the remaining members of the body of Messiah?

God's Kingdom in the Parables (Part One)

The Parable of the Sower and the Seed

Mark begins his record of Jesus Christ’s ministry in this fashion:

Now after John [the Baptist] was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (Mark 1:14-15)

Though many today conclude that the essence of Christianity is the forgiveness of sins or the wonder of God’s love, a considered reading of the gospels reveals that Christ’s message centered on the Kingdom of God (or the Kingdom of Heaven). His ministry began with preaching repentance and the good news of the Kingdom (Matthew 4:17, 23; 9:35; Luke 4:43; 9:11; Acts 1:3).

His forerunner, John the Baptist, preached the same basic message (Matthew 3:1-2), as did the apostles (Matthew 10:7; Luke 9:2, 60; Acts 8:12). The Kingdom theme accompanied Paul on his travels (Acts 14:22; 19:8; 20:25; 28:23, 31) and lights up his epistles (Romans 14:17; I Corinthians 4:20; 6:9-10; 15:50; Colossians 4:11; I Thessalonians 2:12). Though Christianity comprises many principles, the essence of Christ’s message is the Kingdom of God. Grasping God’s purpose for humanity begins with comprehending the Kingdom.

A Word of Many Usages

The same Greek word for “kingdom,” basileia, is used in all these references, and its basic meaning is “dominion.” However, the Bible’s writers do not always speak of the divine Kingdom in the same way, so understanding the Kingdom of God depends on recognizing its different applications.

  • A common usage of basileia is future-oriented: The great hope of true Christians is Christ’s return to bear rule over the earth (Revelation 11:15; Daniel 2:44).

  • The Kingdom of God is also a present spiritual reality, such that those God calls in this age are figuratively translated into that Kingdom (Ephesians 2:6; Colossians 1:13), even as they live out their lives in, but not of, the world. God has dominion over the church, making it a component—though not the fullness—of the Kingdom of God now.

  • A third usage of basileia refers to Christ Himself as the King of His Kingdom, such as when He told the Pharisees that the Kingdom of God was in their midst (see Luke 17:21).

Basileia is used in yet another, often-overlooked way that is necessary to understand a large measure of Christ’s ministry. This disregarded usage appears most clearly in the Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers (Matthew 21:33-44). At the end of the parable, Jesus says, “Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken from you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of it” (verse 43; emphasis ours throughout). This refers not to the future establishment of Christ’s Kingdom on earth, but to a dominion then in existence.

The context of this parable begins in Matthew 21:23, indicating that its audience (and that of the Parable of the Two Sons in verses 28-32) was “the chief priests and the elders of the people.” Verses 45-46 show their reaction:

Now when the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables, they perceived that He was speaking of them. But when they sought to lay hands on Him, they feared the multitudes, because they took Him for a prophet.

Even though God had not given the religious leaders the means to understand all the mysteries of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:11), they could still perceive that Jesus aimed several of His teachings directly at them.

The chapter break obscures that Jesus continued speaking to the same leaders in the Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:1-14), another parable of “the kingdom of heaven” (verse 2). The king sends out invitations to the feast in batches. The first two sets are declined, signifying the response of the physical nation of Israel. Only after the “king . . . sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city” (verse 7)—foreshadowing Jerusalem’s destruction forty years after they rejected the gospel of the Kingdom—does a third call go out, and his servants find suitable guests for the wedding.

And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye?” (Matthew 7:3)

An old Yiddish proverb reads, “Der Spigel iz der greste farfirer,” meaning “The mirror is the greatest deceiver.” We find this statement especially true when we use mirrors that distort the image. How many of us have:

  • seen mirrors at amusement parks that make us look taller or fatter than we really are?

  • tried to shave or perhaps to insert contact lenses using those stainless steel mirrors at Interstate highway rest areas?

  • tried to judge whether to pull out into traffic using a side-view mirror with the warning etched onto it, “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear”?

Jesus’ brother, James, advises us that looking into God’s law—“the perfect law of liberty”—and becoming a faithful doer of the Word is the only accurate and reliable mirror to evaluate spiritual progress (James 1:22-25). But many of us prefer to judge our spiritual progress by making comparisons with one another, something the apostle Paul points out in II Corinthians 10:12 as being unwise.

Blind Spot

Human nature, very standardized and predictable, seems to have a blind spot to its own faults and shortcomings. Like the car mirrors mentioned above, human nature distorts what we see in ourselves. This mirror is the great deceiver when we apply it to ourselves, but so clear when observing the faults of others.

Jesus’ admonition in Matthew 7:1-5 reflects this principle:

Judge not, that you be not judged [Jesus refers to condemning or passing sentence, something we are not authorized to do]. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, “Let me remove the speck from your eye”; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

In Romans 2:19-24, the apostle Paul gives a parallel warning to Jewish religious leaders for hypocritical condemning:

. . . and are confident that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, having the form of knowledge and truth in the law. You, therefore, who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal? You who say, “Do not commit adultery,” do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law? For “the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,” as it is written.

In both instances, the topic of judging is ancillary to the egregious evil of tolerating sin in oneself. In other words, the anger both Jesus and Paul express is far more intense against concealing or tolerating sin in oneself than against judging. As we learn in the first chapter of Amos, the sins of Israel’s enemies were hideous and disgusting, but the concealed hypocritical sins within Israel—from the people who allegedly made a unique covenant with God—produced a more noxious stench in God’s nostrils.

Other people’s sins do and should make us angry. But the things that intensely annoy or anger us about other people’s behaviors should serve as warning indicators of the very things that God finds offensive in us.

God has feelings. He cares. He is an emotional Being, and those emotions can motivate Him, just like they motivate human beings. Our emotions ought to motivate us to loathe the same things God loathes.

Years ago, a minister of my acquaintance gave a sermonette in which he suggested that every time we had car problems, we should try to find a constructive spiritual parallel or analogy. Perhaps bald tires could represent a lack of faith or low oil on the dipstick, a lack of Holy Spirit. In that spirit, when we see spiritual faults in others, we should convert them into mirrors, examining our own spiritual progress and looking for similar things in ourselves that grieve God’s Holy Spirit.

Yeshua: Judge, Priest, Sovereign, And Prophet

In “Yeshua: Judge, Priest, Sovereign, And Prophet” we reveal the four levels of appointed authority as defined by the Torah and how Yeshua fulfills each office. This video builds the case that the Torah is the foundation of authority and right-ruling at each level and was not abolished by Yeshua or Shaul (Paul). This is a deep study for serious students of the Word.

For the Love of Money

August 28, 2020

If you take a careful look at all the evils that we suffer right now, you’ll find a love of money at the very heart. Yes, there are other evils mixed in, but the very foundation of these events is greed. And, since power and money are essentially the same thing, to speak of one is to speak of the other.

The Democrats, the Republicans, the BLM movement, George Soros, China, the Catholics, Corrupt Bible Translations, Neo-Nazis, Antifa, Pornography, Gay Rights, and even Baptists like Jerry Falwell… all have the love of money at the root of their evil.

August 27, 2020

It’s been assumed for centuries that a prerequisite for the coming of Antichrist would be a “revived” world order—an umbrella under which national boundaries dissolve and ethnic groups, ideologies, religions, and economics from around the world orchestrate a single and dominant sovereignty. At the head of the utopian administration, a single personality will surface. He will appear to be a man of distinguished character, but will ultimately become “a king of fierce countenance” (Daniel 8:23). With imperious decree, he will facilitate a One-World Government, universal religion, and global socialism. Those who refuse his New World Order will inevitably be imprisoned or destroyed until at last he exalts himself “above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God” (2 Thessalonians 2:4).

Bible prophecy depicts this coming tyrant as the deadliest in human history. He will try to carry out a satanic “Final Solution” to inflict genocide far beyond that done through Adolf Hitler’s plan by the same name. And this soon-to-come era is closer than many can imagine, yet most don’t comprehend the events that lie just ahead.

In Antichrist and the Final Solution, you will learn…

• How a “Man of Sin” will soon appear on the world stage

• The truth about the “False Prophet” who will assist him

• What happens when Israel signs the upcoming “peace treaty”

• Why a Third Temple will be built and sacrifices resume

• How “life” will be given to an “image of the Beast”

• What happens when the “seals,” “trumpets,” and “bowls” described in Revelation unfold

• Why 144 Jews will be mysteriously “sealed”

• Why and how Nephilim giants will return as agents of God’s judgment

• Who or what “Mystery Babylon” is

• The truth about the battle of Armageddon, the Second Coming of Jesus, the Millennial reign, the Great White Throne judgment, Heaven, Hell, and YOUR DESTINY!

FALLING AWAY: Are evangelicals changing their minds about same-sex relationships?

(OPINION) CP – Two reports caught my eye this week.

One: In 2007, 90 percent of evangelicals said their church forbid (63 percent) or strongly discouraged (27 percent) “homosexual behaviors.” In 2020, that figure has dropped to 65 percent (33.7 percent forbid, while 31.4 percent strongly discourage).

Two: In 2008, 34.4 percent of evangelicals between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five supported same-sex marriage. In 2018, that figure had risen to 56.1 percent.

Could this data be related? Are evangelical churches changing their position on same-sex marriage to align with and attract younger adults? Are younger evangelicals changing their position on same-sex marriage because their churches are? Or are both happening?

For twenty centuries, orthodox Christians have known that the Bible forbids same-sex sexual relations. (For more, see my website paper, “What does the Bible say about homosexuality?”)

However, as we noted yesterday, we currently live in a “post-truth” culture that is convinced perception is reality and truth is whatever you believe it to be. Tolerance is the cardinal value of our day, while intolerance is the cardinal sin.

What We Don’t Know About the Antichrist

Four things we don’t know about the antichrist are the subject of much speculation. The first is his nationality. It isn’t hard to find writers who teach that Antichrist will be a Syrian. The Bible doesn’t say he will come from that ancient nation, but some conclude this through reasoning that usually goes like this: “Antiochus Epiphanes was a type of the antichrist and he was a Syrian. Therefore, the antichrist will be a Syrian.”

Although it’s permissible to conjecture in these matters to some extent, the problem with this kind of reasoning is that it overlooks individuals of other nationalities who were also a type of the Antichrist. Nebuchadnezzar was a type of the Antichrist, and he was a Chaldean. So why not say the Antichrist will be a Chaldean? Adolf Hitler was a type of the Antichrist, and he was a German. So why not say the Antichrist will be a German? The same can be said for Pharaoh, an Egyptian. We could go on and on, but the point is that maintaining an adamant position in this kind of reasoning doesn’t settle the issue.

The second thing we don’t know about the Antichrist is whether he will be a Jew or a Gentile (a non-Jewish person). Some say he’ll be a Jew because the Bible says “neither shall he regard the God of his fathers” (Daniel 11:37, KJV). Others say he will be a Gentile because this verse has been incorrectly translated and it should read, “He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers” (Daniel 11:37, NIV). If the correct translation is “God,” he will come from a monotheistic religion (probably Jewish); if the correct translation is “gods,” he will come from a polytheistic religion (probably Gentile).

Then there are those who reason that “the antichrist will be Jewish because the Jews will accept him as their Messiah and they would never accept a Gentile.” Or “the antichrist will be Jewish because he will be a counterfeit of Christ and He was a Jew.” The late Reverend Jerry Falwell (father of currently embattled Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr.), whose theology was usually sound, got in trouble on this one. He believed the Antichrist will be a Jew—and he might have been right, but the… fact is, whether the Antichrist will be a Jew or a Gentile is not revealed in the Bible. Those who think he will be are definitely in the minority. Incidentally, one of the complaints against Reverend Falwell was that he was anti-Semitic for thinking like this. On the contrary, Falwell was one of Israel’s strongest supporters and did much to help the Jewish people.

The third thing we don’t know about the Antichrist is his name. We know “his number is six hundred threescore and six,” but that’s different from his name (Revelation 13:18). Several elaborate systems have been developed in an effort to reveal the name of the Antichrist, but they have all been wrong. Some names these systems have come up with are Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan, William “Bill” Clinton, Barack Obama, and several of the popes. These should be seen for what they are—just wild guesses.

The Final Solution, in the ultimate accounting, resulted, as stated before, in the deaths of about six million Jews—two-thirds of European Jewry. The ghastly evil was accomplished through gassings, shootings, random acts of terror and violence, disease, and starvation.

Nazi brutality proved beyond any shadow of doubt that the evil prevalent in the times of Genghis Khan continued to rage into the twentieth century. With firearms available, the murderous Third Reich killing machine was many times more lethal to humanity than the primitive weapons wielded by Khan’s butchers.

And even the guns and bullets could not satisfy the bloodlust. Heydrich, Himmler, and their master, Adolf Hitler, determined that the process of murdering Jews and other undesirables by shooting them was inadequate to their ambitious plan for the Final Solution. The method evolved from herding a few victims into the wooded areas, forcing them to kneel, then shooting them in the back of their heads. But even this wasn’t taking care of their intended purpose quickly enough. So, Nazi troops would have workforce prisoners from death camps dig long trenches. They also had the victims, themselves, dig their own trench graves. The doomed people would be told to turn and face the deep ditches, then were shot in the back of the head. They fell dead into the ditches.

This still wasn’t efficient enough for the murderous upper echelon of the Nazi regime. So, next, they contrived what was known as “sardine packing.” Victims would be forced to prostrate themselves face down in the trenches. They would then be shot. Then another group would be forced to lie atop the first layer of corpses. They, too, were shot. This went on until the trench was filled. Dozers then moved gigantic mounds of earth back into the mass grave and the horrific deed was complete.

However, this method was soon seen as inefficient as well. It cost too much in terms of ammunition. Plus, in many cases, the soldiers charged with the ghastly executions suffered from psychological breakdowns. Even the chief architect of the evil, Heinrich Himmler, upon witnessing one of the executions, became so ill when a bit of brain matter splashed on him that he had to be carried out in an almost-passed-out state from the site.

Lukewarm and Carnal Christians Should Heed This Prophetic Warning

(OPINION) Jamie Morgan – God always warns the body of Christ when the devil is planning something against us. In this era, He is sounding an alarm to warn us of a coming move of the enemy that will target lukewarm, worldly, and carnal Christians.

Recently, in my church’s midweek corporate prayer meeting, the Lord gave me a vision. In the vision, I saw a dark, foreboding sky as if a storm were brewing. I knew this represented trouble on the horizon. The enemy was building momentum to strike.

I then saw vultures circling the earth. Vultures are scavengers that are stealthy in stalking their prey. They have a keen sense of knowing when an animal is weak, sick, and unhealthy; they can smell the stench of disease and death. After vultures attack, they ravage their prey until only the carcass is left.

In my vision, vultures represented demonic spirits whose assignment was defeat and destruction. As the vision continued, I saw the vultures circling over the body of Christ, specifically targeting lukewarm, worldly, and carnal Christians.

They were searching for Christians who refused to repent of the things of this world, who were not fully surrendered to God and who were spiritually weak. The Lord made it clear that the agenda of Satan in this hour is to bring destruction to the body of Christ by attacking Christians who can’t tear themselves away from the things of this world.

“Who can believe what we have heard? Upon whom has the arm of Hashem– been revealed? Isaiah 53:1 (The Israel BibleTM)

In his book Siach Nechama (Discourse of Comfort), Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky writes that the Messiah lives and is with us right now, and the redemption is ready and waiting. When Israel merits it. The Messiah will be revealed and redeem them immediately.

The rabbi’s new announcement was explained in the Hebrew language website, Hidabroot. As an explanation, Rabbi Kanievsky quoted the words of the Jerusalem Talmud in Tractate Brachot (2: 4) and Midrash Rabbah on the Book of Lamentations (Chapter 1), in which it is stated that on the day of the Temple’s destruction, the Ninth of Av, the Messiah of Israel was born.

“It seems that what the Sages wanted to say was that even though the Temple was destroyed, redemption exists everywhere. The Messiah is alive with us and passes on in each generation to another body,” Rabbi Kanievsky wrote, adding: “And this is the message: that you should never despair because redemption is already here, Amen.”

Also, Rabbi Kanievsky often mentions the words of the Gemara in Tractate Ketubot that “a generation that the [Messiah] son of David comes is critical of the disciples of sages.”

Rabbi Inspects Red Heifer In Secret Location In Israel For Use In 3rd Temple

(OPINION) PNW – Rabbi Azaria Ariel, traveled to an undisclosed ranch in Israel to lead the Temple Institute’s efforts to raise a red heifer for the performance of the commandment of producing the purifying ashes of the red heifer.

He recently inspected the current red heifer candidates and shared their status. One of the two more mature candidates is still very viable, even though it has a few hairs which aren’t sufficiently red, as required by halacha (Jewish law).

Two new candidates were born in the early months of 2020, and they are currently viable. The ordinance of the red heifer is described in the Bible: This is the ritual law that Hashem has commanded: Instruct B’nei Yisrael to bring you a red cow without blemish, in which there is no defect and on which no yoke has been laid. (Numbers 19:2)

The purifying power of the ashes of the red heifer possess the ability to overcome the spiritual impurity contracted via physical contact with a corpse or cadaver, known in Hebrew as טמא מת – tamei met. The renewal of the ashes of the red heifer would enable kohanim (Temple priests) today to achieve the highest level of spiritual purity, allowing them to resume their work in the Holy Temple.

This would eliminate one more stumbling block on the way to rebuilding the Holy Temple and renewing the Divine service. Rabbi Azaria also mentions just a few of the many other commandments whose performance will be enabled by or enhanced by the resumption of the ashes of the red heifer. Following are Rabbi Azaria’s words translated into English.

7 End-Times Prophecies That Will ‘Get the Whole World’s Attention’

(OPINION) Charisma – In more than 40 years of ministry, spirit-filled pastor Larry Huch says he has seen many trends among believers, but one, in particular, that is very disheartening. Christians, he says, live well below the promises and covenants of God, simply in part because they don’t fully understand where they are on God’s biblical timeline.

But he tells Dr. Steve Greene on this episode of Greenelines on the Charisma Podcast Network, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are ancient prophecies currently unfolding that will release the outpouring of God’s supernatural blessings and miracles in these End Times—if only the believer will receive and latch onto them.

“In ancient Hebrew, there is no word for coincidence,” Huch says. “Jesus said you have to have eyes to see and ears to hear. … We are literally in that time in which God said ‘I will open up for you the windows of heaven. There will be signs and wonders and miracles.’

“And when you read it, it will give you faith—not faith that you hope something good happens. You know something good will happen because these Bible prophecies are all coming pass to right now. “… In the very last days of the coming of the Messiah, Hebrew prophecy says the eyes of the Gentiles will be opened up and they will begin to understand their Jewish roots in the Scriptures. The power and the blessing of God will be so great on them that it will get the whole world’s attention.

A Transcript Of Pastor Dana Coverstone’s Ominous New Prophetic Warning About The End Of 2020

(OPINION) Michael Snyder – Throughout human history, God has been speaking to people through dreams and visions, and our time is no exception.

I know that a lot of people don’t like this, and most churches today don’t even believe in the supernatural.  In fact, in most churches you will never hear a single peep about the warnings that God has been sending to America over and over again, and that is extremely unfortunate.

These days, so many churches and ministries just want to tell you exactly what they think you want to hear so that you will give them tithes and offerings that are as big as possible.  And for many years that giant religious industry has greatly prospered, but that era is coming to an end.

There have been so many people receiving dreams and visions about America’s future, and many times those dreams and visions are given to people that we wouldn’t expect.

Pastor Dana Coverstone is the pastor of a very small church in rural Kentucky, and he probably never imagined that he would be given supernatural experiences that would be shared all over the globe.

He is a very humble man, and he was just trying to lead his small church as effectively as he could. But I think that one of the reasons why God has been giving him these experiences is because he is a pastor that still believes in the authority of the Word of God and that still preaches the message of the cross.  Sadly, the same cannot be said for most pastors in America today.

And nobody can deny that the things that he was shown about the first half of 2020 came to pass in the exact timeframe that he was shown.

He was shown the coronavirus pandemicin advance, and he was also shown the great civil unrest that would erupt in advance.

But then he was given another experience in which he was shown things about the months of September, October, November and beyond, and after he shared that experience he was hit by a tsunami of hatred and criticism from religious people all across the United States.  For those that do not remember, here is a reminder of what he was shown
