In the fall of 1918, as the deadly second wave of the influenza pandemic known as the “Spanish flu” swept across the nation, schools in cities around the United States closed in order to limit contagion.
But in the nation’s two largest urban centers, New York and Chicago, public schools remained open—even during October 1918, the flu’s deadliest month, when some 195,000 Americans died. Health officials in both cities placed their bets on newly robust school hygiene and medical inspection programs, which reformers of the Progressive Era had put in place over the decades before the flu hit.
Foreign governments have been influencing and infiltrating American universities, using large sums of money, contracts, gifts and special agreements for espionage purposes, instilling propaganda, and to get what they want out of American institutions. In fact, an investigation by the Department of Education found that American universities, including the likes of Harvard, NYU and Yale, have accepted up to $6.4 billion in hidden foreign donations. This revelation has prompted Congress to demand that all universities hand over the records of the foreign donations. The multi-million-dollar gifts pose a national security threat from rogue regimes and foreign special interests.
American universities must produce all records of bribes received from communist China and other rogue regimes
The Head of House Oversight and Reform, Virginia Foxx, and House Education and Labor Committee head James Comer joined the head of the House Judiciary, Representative Jim Jordan in a powerful investigation into the foreign influence of American universities. The representatives wrote to the University of Chicago, the University of Delaware, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Harvard, and New York University, demanding that each institution produce all unredacted records of financial gifts and special agreements with foreign nations dating back to March 2015. The lawmakers agreed that foreign governments are leveraging money to get some kind of benefit from the universities.
Parents, Teacher, Churches Sue Chicago School District to Stop Hindu Meditation From Being Taught to Students
(Christian News Network) – A coalition of parents, a teacher, and a group of churches have filed suit against Chicago Public Schools in an effort to stop the district from allowing Hindu transcendental meditation, and its initiation Puja, from being taught to students.
“Although all named defendants have made statements to the contrary, the ‘Quiet Time’ program is based in Hindu beliefs and the practice of ‘transcendental meditation’ is fundamentally religious in nature,” the legal challenge states.
“Plaintiffs’ rights under the First Amendment were violated when defendants created environments within public schools where Hindu beliefs and the practice of ‘transcendental meditation’ were being endorsed and students were coerced to engage in religious practices against their wills.”
The plaintiffs include the groups Separation of Hinduism from our Schools — a coalition of parents and students who oppose meditation and other practices being taught in schools — and Civil Liberties for Urban Believers, an association of churches and ministries in the Chicago area.
Substitute teacher Dasia Skinner, parent Darryl Williams and former student Amontae Williams are named in the suit as well. According to the official complaint, the David Lynch Foundation approached the University of Chicago Urban Labs to present the stated “Quiet Time” program within Chicago schools.
The program is offered to inner-city schools across the country to combat “traumatic stress.” “The Quiet Time program is a practical, evidence-based approach to reduce stress and dramatically improve academic performance, student wellness and the school environment,” the foundation website reads. “This schoolwide program complements existing educational strategies by improving the physiological underpinnings of learning and behavior.”
It isn’t surprising that this ugly little episode in the Left’s ongoing efforts to erase our history and make us ashamed of being Americans would happen at the University at Buffalo, where everything that is wrong with academic life in America today thrives and is praised. I spoke there a few years ago, or tried to. What actually happened was that I was screamed at by self-righteous Leftist fascists for an hour and a half while university security personnel stood by and watched, and made no attempt to do anything to create the basis for a civil discussion. But the University at Buffalo is no outlier. It is all too typical.
My latest at PJ Media:
Having successfully taken down monuments to those notable defenders of slavery Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Frederick Douglass, the outraged mob of our Leftist moral superiors has now prevailed against a lesser light of the bad old, not yet “fundamentally transformed” America. The College Fix reported Tuesday that “the University at Buffalo will be removing former U.S. President Millard Fillmore’s name from campus, citing ‘systemic racism’ and his support of the Compromise of 1850.”
This will require the renaming of the Millard Fillmore Academic Center, “which contains several academic departments, student dormitories, a theater, and other services,” and which “will now be referred to as simply the Academic Center.”In this case, the mob behind this latest act of historical vandalism is made up of university administrators, who announced that “#UBuffalo will remove the names Millard Fillmore, James O. Putnam and Peter B. Porter from four locations at UB, a decision that aligns with the university’s commitment to fight systemic racism and create a welcoming environment for all.” UB President Satish Tripathi said: “Clearly, historical namings on our campus—whether academic buildings, residential halls, interior spaces or thoroughfares—carry important symbolic value. We want to ensure that these symbols align with our mission—namely, that we are a diverse, inclusive scholarly community.”Tripathi either doesn’t know or doesn’t care about the fact that Fillmore actually said: “God knows that I detest slavery, but it is an existing evil, for which we are not responsible, and we must endure it, till we can get rid of it without destroying the last hope of free government in the world.” Despite this, however, as President of the United States, he signed the Fugitive Slave Act, a law requiring antislavery Northerners to return escaped slaves to their owners in the South.Fillmore did this not because he thought slavery was wonderful, but because he was constrained, as all presidents are, by the political exigencies of the day….
