Everything Changes at Stonehenge as Pivotal Theory is “Totally Destroyed”

July 4, 2020

Scientists in England have determined Stonehenge's huge blocks were transported over land, rejecting the theory that Neolithic builders “floated” the huge slabs from Wales to the construction site at Salisbury Plain.

Built around 3,000–2,000 BC, this famous Neolithic monument was created using a mixture of local and distant-sourced stones. For example the Altar Stone has for a long time been associated with a quarry in Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, which led to ideas that the massive stones had been rafted over sea and up the Bristol Channel. However, a new paper published in the  Journal of Archaeological Science  presents new evidence that the Altar Stone “does not match” the Milford Haven rocks and they have outright debunked the “raft theory,” suggesting the stones “travelled a route similar to the A40 .”

A study of the Altar Stone at Stonehenge has changed the theory of how the huge stones arrived at the site. (English Heritage )

The Historic Stonehenge Origins Debate

In the new study archaeologist Rob Ixer of the University College London says England’s famous Neolithic stone circle has long been thought of as containing local stones and blocks cut from mountains in Wales ' Preseli Hills. Now it is known for sure that Stonehenge's bluestone blocks arrived “over land.” What this means is that the team of archaeologists have effectively debunked a long-standing theory that Stonehenge's bluestone blocks had been transported to Salisbury Plain on rafts from Wales.

The scientist explains that the green-grey Sarsens were sourced locally from Marlborough Downs about 20 miles (32.19 km) from Stonehenge and that the bluestones are also “indigenous rocks” known as dolerite and rhyolite. The first archaeological analysis of the purplish-green 2-meter (6.5 feet) wide, mica-rich Altar Stone, thought to weight around six tons, was undertaken by the British geologist and archaeologist Herbert Henry Thomas in 1923. According to a report in The Times , he “linked most of the stones with rocks found some 150 miles away in the Preseli Hills of north Pembrokeshire, Wales.”

Reign of Terror Victims Found Hidden in the Walls of a Paris Church

July 1, 2020

Evidence of Reign of Terror victims found hidden in the walls of a Paris church is changing the narrative of one of the bloodiest episodes in modern European history. It is now believed that many of those guillotined during the French Revolution were buried in Chapelle Expiatorie, a chapel, and not in the catacombs of Paris as was thought. This discovery could change the traditional narrative related to this bloody period in French history.

Boxes of Remains Detected in Chapel Walls

Chapelle Expiatoire is a chapel and a national monument in the heart of Paris. It dates from the 19 th century AD and was built by King Louis XVIII , who was restored to the throne after the fall of Napoleon. Aymeric Peniguet de Stoutz, the chapel’s administrator, ‘turned historical detective after he noticed curious anomalies in the walls between the columns of the lower chapel’ according to The Guardian . Aymeric contacted the relevant authorities, who had an archaeologist, Philippe Charlier, investigate the walls in a non-invasive way. He did this by carefully inserting a tiny camera through the stones of the walls.

This allowed Charlier and his team to see the cause of the curious anomalies. The archaeologists found four large boxes or chests in the walls, and they contained bones. Aymeric is quoted by The Smithsonian as saying, “I cried when the forensic pathologist assured me he had seen human phalange [feet and hand] bones in the photographs.” It was immediately clear that this was a major historical find.

The chapel wall contained four wooden ossuaries - specially built chests designed to hold human remains. According to The Guardian , the archaeologist who found the remains reported that “There is earth mixed with fragments of bones”, which suggests that they were once buried. Immediately it was assumed that the remains were from victims who had died during the Reign of Terror.

Reign of Terror After the French Revolution

The Reign of Terror was a wave of violence in France that involved mass killings and executions that began soon after the French Revolution had taken hold. The Reign of Terror entered its most bloody period under the leadership of the fanatical revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre . Many of the victims were aristocrats, who were often guillotined on spurious treason charges. The most famous victims of the revolutionaries were Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

The Chapelle Expiatoire, where the wall-entombed human remains were found, is located close to the Place de la Revolution, where countless individuals were beheaded by guillotine. This public space is now known as the Place de la Concorde . The chapel was built on the grounds of the Madeleine Cemetery which was the burial place of many of those who had been publicly executed, including King Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette. By 1794, so many had been buried in the cemetery that there was no more room and it was closed. Ironically, Robespierre is buried in this cemetery, along with so many of his victims, after he was beheaded, following his fall from power.

Israeli Archaeologists Find Ancient Artifacts from the Time of Ezra and Nehemiah

June 30, 2020

(CBN) – The Israel Antiquities Authority on Tuesday announced that it has uncovered remnants from Babylon’s destruction of Jerusalem during the time of Ezra and Nehemiah.  Excavators uncovered a seal and a bullae – a seal impression use to sign documents or containers during ancient times – in the Givati Parking Lot Excavation of the City of David in Jerusalem.

These two artifacts were found next to the rubble of a structure that was destroyed during the 6th century BC by the Babylonians.  “Despite the numerous excavations conducted in Jerusalem to date, so far the findings revealed from the Persian period are extremely meager and therefore we lack information regarding the character and appearance of the city during this period,” Prof. Yuval Gadot of the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures at Tel Aviv University, and Dr. Yiftah Shalev of the Israel Antiquities Authority said in a statement.

The researchers said the finding was very rare and reveals just how badly Jerusalem was damaged during the Babylonian destruction. “The finding of the stamp and seal impression in the City of David indicates that despite the city’s dire situation after the destruction, efforts were made to restore the administrative authorities to normal, and its residents continued to partly use the structures that were destroyed,” explained Prof. Gadot and Dr. Shalev.

Seals Tell of Jewish Return to Jerusalem After Babylonian Exile

June 30, 2020

In Jerusalem, the discovery of two homemade seals may provide unprecedented insights into an extremely critical period in Jewish history and the Bible. The artifact is showing that the city remained an administrative center, even after the destruction of Jerusalem (587 BC). It may also provide clues as to the resettlement of the city by the Jews after the Babylonian Exile.

The finds were made by archaeologists from the Israel Antiquities Authority and Tel Aviv University. They were unearthed during an excavation in a parking lot in a historic part of Jerusalem. A seal, which is often known by the Latin term bulla, was uncovered. It was made of recycled pottery shards. The object is about 2 inches (8 cm) in width and has a double impression and several carvings representing symbols.

Finding of Mysterious Seals From Persian Period

The seal would have been used to sign documents or attached to containers. This was done by officials to ensure that they were not tampered with or intercepted. Along with this seal was a “strange DIY pottery sherd seal with fake writing,” reports The Times of Israel . On it are inscribed a figure seated with two pillars. Because of its size, it may have been used to seal large containers, rather than parchment.

Predynastic Egypt: Life Before the Pyramids

June 29, 2020

The history of Ancient Egypt spans several millennia and is filled with wonders and achievements which are veiled in mystery and the enigmatic secrets of distant times. For decades, the archaeological excavations and the discoveries in the field of Egyptology never ceased to amaze both the scholars and the world. But rarely do we stop to think about predynastic Egypt and the very beginnings of a powerful civilization. Where did it all come from? How did the peoples of the Nile valley develop into such an amazing and highly advanced civilization?

The Long Age of Predynastic Egypt

The areas adjacent to the fertile Nile valleys were always a hotbed of human development. To understand the emergence of the earliest predynastic Egyptian society, we need to reach far back in time. Some of the earliest steps of evolution and development in the Nile Valley began as early as 120,000 years BC. One of these was the Achulean Culture – a primitive stage of early human development, characterized by stone tools of an oval, pear shape. As Homo Sapiens gradually overtook Homo Erectus, different cultures took the spot, with further advancements in primitive technologies.

One of the unique cultures in prehistoric Egypt that developed was the so-called Khormoussan culture, named for the site of Khor Musa, near the later famed Egyptian site of Wadi Halfa. This society appeared around 45,000 years BC around Maghreb and the southern regions of the Sahara. One thing that is notable for the peoples of this culture is the slow abandonment of the desert regions, and a migration nearer to the fertile valleys of the Nile. They were nomadic, following wild herds and making temporary camps in river valleys.

Buried Children With Coins In Their Mouths Found In Poland

June 26, 2020

The decaying remains of 115 children’s bodies have been discovered by construction workers laying the new S19 road in Jeżowe near the town of Nisko, in Podkarpackie province, south-east Poland. This apparently bizarre discovery confirmed a long-standing local belief that a lost children's graveyard was located somewhere in the Church Mountains area. Archaeologists who investigated the find discovered that many of the children had coins placed in their mouths.

According to an article in The First News , the children’s bodies were discovered during work on a section of the S19 motorway, which is part of the 700 kilometer (435 mile) long Via Carpatia project that will link the Baltic states with south-eastern Europe, running through Podlasie, Mazovia, Lublin and Podkarpacie. The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways has confirmed the discovery, saying that about “70-80 percent of all burials are children” and that they had been found in sandy ground on an east-west axis with their heads facing west.

Some of the children’s skeletons had coins in their mouths ( Arkadia Firma Archeologiczna )

Most of the children’s bodies were buried in individual graves but a group of four bodies had been positioned in close formation, but not on top of each other, and all their heads were resting to one side facing west towards the setting sun. The fourth child, resting on the edge of the group, was considerably younger than the other three. When archaeologists looked more closely at the bodies, they found many of the children had coins placed in their mouths. In a Global Legal Chronicle article, archaeologist Katarzyna Oleszek, who worked at the site, stated that the mysterious coins are a sign of the belief in “obols of the dead” or “ Charon’s obol ” which comes from a pre-Christian burial tradition that was practiced as late as the nineteenth century by Pope Pius IX .

Excavators Find Christian Town in Galilee’s ‘Forbidden Territories’

June 25, 2020

After years of investigations, Israeli archaeologists now believe that they have uncovered a Byzantine-era Christian town in Galilee. This site has yielded a host of remains and historic artifacts. It is believed that the settlement was probably destroyed during the invasion of the area by the Persians in the 7th century AD. This settlement is offering unparalleled insights into the Christian community during and the Byzantine Empire.

The settlement was discovered in 2007 during a construction project on a road in Pi Maẓuva Galilee in Northern Israel . This site was the subject of a salvage excavation before the completion of the roadwork. Archaeologists from The Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), undertook the investigation. The researchers wrote in the journal Atiqot that excavations ‘revealed building complexes, some separated by an alley, dating from the Byzantine period’.

The Unknown Christian Town Found in Galilee

A number of artifacts were uncovered, including a bronze cross and an ashlar limestone lintel. A great amount of pottery was uncovered and they ‘date to the late Byzantine period and comprise local and imported vessels’ reports Atiqot. Many shards of pottery had crosses inscribed on them and some other Christian iconography was also found. This all strongly indicates that it was a Christian town.

There is no Christian source that attests that followers of Christ occupied the area. However, a Hebrew source refers to this as ‘ being part of ‘forbidden territories’ and according to Jewish law (halacha), were not considered part of Jewish territory,’ reports The Times of Israel . This would seem to confirm that this area was settled by Christians and is aligned with the archaeological finds at Pi Maẓuva.

New maps and a new website let people explore the ancient sunken continent of ZealandiaGNS Science

Ancient sunken continent of Zealandia laid bare in new interactive maps

June 24, 2020

Newly released maps of Zealandia, a massive sunken landmass many have argued should be classified as Earth's eighth continent, are revealing the topography of this underwater land in unprecedented detail. The new trove of data comes from New Zealand research institute GNS Science, which has released two new maps alongside an interactive website designed to give people novel ways to explore the complex geoscience data.

“Users can zoom and pan around different thematic geoscience webmaps of the region,” explains Vaughn Stagpoole, program leader on the development of the new website. “They can readily view and interrogate the maps and turn layers on or off. They can also query features in the layers and generate custom maps of their own.”

These new maps, bathymetric (left) and tectonic, and accompanying interactive website, offer a detailed look at ZealandiaGNS Science

The two new maps comprise of a tectonic map and a bathymetric map. The tectonic map depicts the 1.9-million-square-mile (4.9-million-sq-km) tectonic profile of this extraordinary submerged landmass, while the bathymetric map generates a detailed picture of the ocean floor, depicting the coastlines and territorial limits of this undersea continent.

“We’ve made these maps to provide an accurate, complete and up-to-date picture of the geology of the New Zealand and southwest Pacific area – better than we have had before,” explains geologist Nick Mortimer, lead author on the new maps. “Their value is that they provide a fresh context in which to explain and understand the setting of New Zealand’s volcanoes, plate boundary and sedimentary basins.”

Archaeologists have discovered the remains of a huge ancient structure near Stonehenge

Huge prehistoric circle of structures discovered near Stonehenge

June 24, 2020

Looming large over the British countryside, Stonehenge cuts an imposing figure – but it’s just a fraction of the structures that once stood in the area. Now, archaeologists have discovered a huge, previously unknown ring of structures surrounding the region at Durrington Walls.

Stonehenge may be the most impressive structure still standing, but in its Neolithic heyday the honor would have gone to the henge at Durrington Walls. Located about 3.2 km (2 mi) away, it had a diameter of 500 m (1,600 ft) – much larger than the more famous monument. It’s thought that this was the site of a village.

And now, archaeologists have discovered that site was more extensive than previously realized. As part of the Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project, a team has found a series of shafts measuring up to 10 m (32.8 ft) wide and 5 m (16.4 ft) deep. These form a ring 2 km (1.2 mi) wide that encompasses Durrington Walls, the neighboring site of Woodhenge, and an even older structure called the Larkhill Causewayed Enclosure.

A map of the newly discovered shafts, forming a ring around Durrington Walls and other Neolithic sites EDINA Digimap Ordnance Survey Service

The team carbon dated the structures to about 2500 BCE. That corresponds to a time when Durrington Walls was occupied, and construction on Stonehenge was ongoing. While up to 20 shafts were found, the team estimates that there may once have been over 30 of them.

“The area around Stonehenge is among the most studied archaeological landscapes on Earth and it is remarkable that the application of new technology can still lead to the discovery of such a massive prehistoric structure which, currently, is significantly larger than any comparative prehistoric monument that we know of in Britain, at least,” says Professor Vince Gaffney, corresponding author of the study.

Judging by the location of the circle of shafts, the archaeologists suggest that the structure was there to mark the boundary of the Durrington henge, and guide visitors towards the religious sites within. It might also have been a warning to less friendly visitors.

The Quest for the Mythical Submerged Temples of Mahabalipuram

Shore Temple. Mahabalipuram, India.  ( University of Southampton )

Mahabalipuram is an ancient city located in the Kancheepuram district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The ‘Seven Pagodas of Mahabalipuram’ was one of the architectural achievements of the Pallava Dynasty (3rd - 9th century AD).

Myths say the beauty of Mahabalipuram aroused the jealousy of Indra, the deva of rain and storms,    so the deity submerged the city under the sea during a great storm. Only the Shore Temple, still visible today, was left above the water as evidence that this beautiful city had once existed.

Evidence for the submerged temples emerged following the devastating tsunami that occurred December 26, 2004. During the tsunami, it was reported that “a long, straight row of large rocks emerge(d) from the water just before the waters rushed back again.” The force of the tsunami managed to expose some objects that were covered by centuries of silt.

These objects include a large stone lion found on Mahabalipuram’s beach, as well as a half-completed rock relief of an elephant. The recent discoveries have sparked renewed interest in the Mahabalipuram legend and many say the myth of the seven submerged temples might one day be considered a true historical event.

Is this archeological proof of the Biblical account of the fall of Jericho?

June 19, 2020

(OPINION) ETH – A Bible expert has come out claiming that recent archeological findings in Israel can prove the Biblical account of the “Fall of Jericho” according to a new report from Express. The Battle of Jericho is mentioned in the Old Testament Book of Joshua and marked the first battle fought in the Israelites’ conquest of the land of Canaan.

This battle is best known for the miraculous fall of Jericho’s walls, brought on about by the Israelites marching around the walls of Jericho seven times and then sounding trumpets and giving a shout of victory. However, Despite this, many have debated over whether the walls of Jericho actually fell in the time described by the Old Testament.

This historical Biblical site of Jericho is said to be located in eastern Palestine, in what is known as Tell es-Sultan or Tel Jericho. According to the report. Archaeological excavations at ancient Jericho have been inconclusive, with experts publishing mixed reports over the years. Archaeologists such as William Gwinn Dever have marked the fall of Jericho a fictional account “invented out of whole cloth”.

Others like British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon have suggested there are historical inaccuracies in the Old Testament’s account. However, Professor Tom Meyer, an expert in Middle Eastern languages from Shasta Bible College and Graduate School in California, believes the clues are there to support the biblical narrative if the event.

Professor Meyer recently told Express” that Jericho, though a comparatively small city by our modern standards, was a very heavily fortified ancient Canaanite city. “Its destruction was essential for the Israelites after they crossed the Jordan River if they were to advance into Canaan. “The fall of Jericho in 1400BC is an excellent example of textual and archaeological evidence collaborating.”

Again, According to the Bible, the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho with the Ark of the Covenant in complete silence for six days. Then on the seventh day, they marched seven times and on the seventh pass, the priests blew their trumpets and the soldiers shouted at the walls to bring the fortifications down.

According to Meyer: “The Bible gives the order of events was that first, the walls fell down, then the city was burnt, and finally it was abandoned. “Every archaeologist who has excavated Jericho has come to the same conclusion. “Upon the stone retaining wall from the time of Joshua – parts of which can still be seen today – a mudbrick wall once stood.

“According to the archaeologists, the mudbrick wall fell outward and down to the base of the foundation stone wall. “Archeologists who dug at the base of the stone retaining wall found a pile of collapsed reddish mudbricks along the entire portion of the retaining wall they unearthed.” A diagram of these fallen bricks can be found in Ms. Kenyon’s excavation reports.

Warrior Burial Is Scythian Amazon Girl No Older Than 13

June 17, 2020

The 'stunning' discovery appears  further confirmation of ancient Greek claims about female fighters known as Amazons among the Scythians of central Asia.

In 1988 Dr Marina Kilunovskaya and Dr Vladimir Semyonov came across the partially mummified young warrior’s grave Saryg-Bulun in Siberia’s modern-day Tuva republic during an emergency excavation.

The archaeologists found the adolescent warrior’s remains so well preserved that a ‘wart’ was visible on the face, and yet at the time there were no indications that this was a female.

This Scythian child was buried with a complete set of weapons: an axe, a one-meter bow made of birch and a quiver with ten arrows some 70 centimeters in length. (Image: Vladimir Semyonov)

‘It was so stunning when we just opened the lid and I saw the face there, with that wart, looking so impressive,’ said Dr. Kilunovskaya.

There was a rough seam on the skin in the abdomen area, implying an attempt at artificial mummification - but no traces were found of trepanation, which was usual among such burials.

The age was estimated at 12 to 13 years. At the time, all the clues suggested this was a male.

Resurrecting the Ancient Israelites From the Valley of Dry Bones

June 17, 2020

The Vision of the Valley of Dry Bones prophecy is one of the most powerful prophecies of the prophet Ezekiel. In this vision, Ezekiel finds himself in a valley full of dry human bones of Israelite origins. He is asked to revive them, bring them hope, and lead them to the land of Israel.

The hand of the LORD was on me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the LORD and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry.… And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them… Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel.”     Ezekiel 37

Ezekiel’s Vision and Jewish Ancestry

For the past decades, paleogenomics, the field dealing with ancient genomes, has been fulfilling Ezekiel’s vision by extracting DNA from dry bones and telling their stories with increasing accuracy. As Ezekiel envisioned, only dry (and cold) bones can tell stories.

Humidity and heat accelerate the degradation of the DNA beyond repair. At times, even the samples we can use are of poor quality, leading to an inability to put together all the pieces of the DNA and thus resulting in incomplete stories from the bones, as if told by stuttering tongueless skeletons. These are only some of the challenges we face in our efforts to reconstruct the past.

Ezekiel’s prophecies were written in the 6th century after several exiles of the Judeans to Babylon (601-582 BC). The importance of this vision to the debate on the continuity of the Jewish people became apparent very quickly. Already in the Talmud, two interpretations were offered.

The first considered it a complete allegory. The second considered it a reality where the Babylonian exiles returned to Israel and continued the Judaean bloodline. Zionism, a secular movement that recruited the Bible to serve its needs whenever necessary, considered the State of Israel the ultimate fulfilment of Ezekiel prophecies and called to the ingathering of the exiles.

Mayans built massive structures thousands of years ago. Researchers found the biggest one yet

June 3, 2020

Airborne laser scanners that can peer through the jungle have revealed what may be the oldest and largest ancient Mayan structure ever found — a 3,000-year-old ceremonial platform almost a mile long according to research published Wednesday.

The 50-foot-high raised earthen platform was found at a site called Aguada Fénix, beside the remote San Pedro River in Mexico’s Tabasco state, near the border with Guatemala.

University of Arizona archaeologist Takeshi Inomata, who led the discovery, said the giant platform was almost certainly used for ceremonies and large gatherings, possibly before the emergence of royal and noble individuals who dominated society at later Mayan sites.

“This was a big construction before the social hierarchy,” Inomata said of the research released in the science journal Nature. “The really interesting implication is what this site tells us about the potential of human collaboration, which can do really amazing things without the presence of a centralized government.”

The site, which has been dated by excavations to between 1,000 B.C. and 800 B.C., was first revealed using lidar – an acronym that stands for light detection and ranging — which works on a similar principle to radar.

Lidar scanners can be carried by small aircraft and bounce hundreds of pulses of laser light every second off the landscape to reveal features that would otherwise be hidden by the vegetation that covers it.

Ancient DNA Yields New Clues to Dead Sea Scrolls

June 2, 2020

The scenario might sound like the opening line of a science-themed comedy routine: a molecular biologist and a Bible scholar meet on a bus. Eight years after that encounter the two have developed a new technique using DNA sequencing that they say will enable them to match—or separate—minuscule fragments of the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls. Their research was published on Tuesday in Cell.

Oded Rechavi investigates inheritance in the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans, and Noam Mizrahi studies ancient Hebrew literature. Both researchers are at Tel Aviv University, and in 2012 they sat beside each other on a bus during an orientation program for new faculty hires. United by a common interest in worms (“Oded works on microscopic C. elegans worms, and I’m working on what worms have left us," Mizrahi quips), the pair subsequently decided to collaborate.

Now their innovative DNA-fingerprinting method—which used carefully sequenced ancient cow and sheep DNA scraped from the backs of bits of animal-skin-based parchments among the Dead Sea Scrolls—is offering new insights into the social fabric of the Essenes, the ascetic Jewish sect widely believed to have written the scrolls. And this sensitive “paleogenomic” technique could be employed to piece together other fragmentary ancient texts in the future, Rechavi says.

“The use of DNA fingerprinting to help us place small pieces of longer texts in their rightful context is extremely exciting and important,” says Charlotte Hempel, a professor of the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple Judaism at the University of Birmingham in England, who was not involved in the new study. Oren Harman, a historian of science at Israel’s Bar-Ilan University, who was also not involved in the research, concurs. “We can suddenly see things that were not visible using more traditional historical, archaeological or literary sources,” he says.

Andrew Snelling continues discussing radioisotope dating, including whether excess heat would be a problem for accelerated decay rates. He then examines radiocarbon dating and determines whether carbon-14 has been found in dinosaur bones, coal and diamonds.

Dr. Snelling completed a BS in applied geology at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, graduating with first-class honors in 1975. His PhD in geology was awarded in 1982 by The University of Sydney for his research thesis titled “A Geochemical Study of the Koongarra Uranium Deposit, Northern Territory, Australia.” Dr. Snelling worked for six years in the exploration and mining industries in Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, variously as a field, mine, and research geologist. For over ten years, Dr. Snelling was a research consultant to the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization for an international collaborative research project funded by the U.S. Department of Energy which involved university and government research scientists from the USA, UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, Sweden, Austria and Belgium.
