New Moon Report — 07/10/2021
Dear Friends, Please join us in looking for the new moon this coming Sunday evening, 11 July 2021! Feel free to click the “Going” button on this Facebook Event, even if you will only be with us in spirit. How to help us look for the new moon: We need more reliable observers in Israel to help us look for the new moon. This is the only way to ensure we are observing the holidays in their appointed times. I have included below this message, simple instructions of how to look for the new moon. It’s super easy and there is no previous experience necessary, so please help us in looking for the new moon. Your observation could make the difference of when we should be observing the holidays. How to send us your observations: If you have successfully sighted the new moon from Israel with your naked eye (we are only interested in observations from Israel), please send us your observation by completing this short form. It’s important you use this form, as opposed to sending us a message, because it asks for all the important information we need and allows us to quickly and efficiently collect all the observations. Thank you for your support: Thanks to our dedicated observers and supporters, we are pleased to be able to offer the New Moon Reports free of charge. We only ask that if you find our reports to be of value, that you please consider supporting our efforts at so we can continue to provide these reports to everyone who needs them.

HOW TO LOOK FOR THE NEW MOON
Where should I look for the new moon from?
Find a nice vantage point of the western horizon to look from. The ideal vantage point is elevated, has as few buildings and trees obstructing your view of the western horizon as possible, and has as little light pollution as possible. Don’t worry if you’re vantage point isn’t perfect, a lot of us are looking for the new moon from less than ideal vantage points and are able to observe very difficult sightings. Please note that we are only interested in new moon observations from Israel.
What day should I look for the new moon?
You should look for the new moon on the first possible evening the new moon may be visible. Be sure to subscribe to our mailing list, to receive an e-mail like this one, letting you know when to look for the new moon. After you subscribe, be sure to add "DevorahsDateTree@gmail.com" to your contacts, so the reports don't go to your SPAM folder.
What time should I look for the new moon?
You should look for the new moon from sunset until you either are confident you have sighted the new moon or the moon has set. Sunset and moonset times for Israel on the evening of the observation can be found in the diagram at the top of this message.
How do I know if I’m looking in the right place?
You should be looking at the Western horizon. If you saw the sun set, you’re looking in the right place.
How can I be sure I saw the new moon?
It is common to see thin white lines on the horizon at sunset, it is therefore important to be sure that what you are looking at is in fact the new moon. A good way to do this, is to look away and then look back, and see whether you can still spot the moon. Also, if you wait a little while, the sky will become darker providing more contrast and making the new moon easier to see. If you are not certain that you saw the new moon, please do not send us your report. We are only interested in reports from observations which are certain.
Can magnifying equipment be used to spot the new moon?
In my opinion it is best to look for the new moon without the aid of magnifying equipment, this includes telescopes, binoculars, and cameras. However, if you decide to use a magnifying aid to spot the new moon and then confirm the sighting with your naked eye, we simply ask that you mention that when you complete the observation form, so that people can decide for themselves whether they wish to accept that particular observation.
Can I look for the new moon by myself?
You can absolutely look for the new moon by yourself, in fact it can be a great way to have some alone time. That being said, looking for the new moon can also be a nice opportunity to spend time with family and friends, should you choose to invite them along. If you would rather not look by yourself, but don’t have anyone to go with, let us know and we will try and match you up with someone near you.
